Doug and I talked and:
I have an opportunity to start buying a horse in January. I am going to get a sizable chunk of money from the college, and after I pay living expenses, and pay off money I owe to others, I want to start investing in buying my first horse.

I have two options right now.

A black 5 yr old Straight Egyptian Arabian who has had one foal. She is sweet and has a great temperment. She is extremely intelligent. She doesn't have body type that is perfect enough for halter competitions for Egyptian Arabians, but she also doesn't have any faults either. She just isn't super refined looking. She will be a great saddle mare and would do great at things like western, and dressage. One of the studs on the farm where she lives right now (and would board at) is what produced such a great pairing the first time she was bred so I could keep breeding her to him.

The second option is her daughter.

Talla is her first foal and is AMAZING. She is amazingly refined, has a beautiful temperment and has stunning movement. She floats. But she is only 3 months old so she could turn into anything. She could live up to her potential or become a total flop. Because of the bloodlines, I would have to find another stud to breed her to when she gets old enough as she is related to all 3 studs on the farm where she was bred. (Grandfather, father, half-brother).

So horsey ladies! What do you think?

For me... I'd go with the mare. She's already broke, sounds like her disposition shows she's not messed up by bad handling and you could be having tons of fun riding and training right away as well as having a stud on hand already for the new foal later. Sounds like she would be your best bet.

Go gor the mare. There's a lot more you can do with her and kind of limited with the foal. That will get 'boring' after a while. Love those Arabians!!

Winona :-)

PS I may be coming thru ID later this week and will do my best to keep you updated.

I am so excited. I am going to go chat with the ranch owner on Wednesday. I wish it was tomorrow! LOL! Either way I will be super excited. I love both horses. The mare has great lineage and is the daughter of the senior stud on the ranch. Her mom was inseminated off farm via A.I. The original owner of her just kept her as a pasture pet until the owner got very ill and ended up having to sell her. She passed through several hands until she was at a clearing house for horses in not very good conditions. The Ranch owners found out about her and rescued her from the clearing house. When I first saw her she wasn't in great conditon (not horrible but certainly needed feeding up). By the time we bred her last year she was looking wonderful. I really fell in love with the mare last year. She has a lot of heart.

I am going to ask the Ranch owner if she will let me post the filly's 3 month video. You ladies have to see this filly move! She is amazing! I am not current on all of my dressage terminology- but there is a certain trot in Dressage where the horse seems to just hover in the air for a second before touching back on the ground again- and this is how the filly trots completely untrained!

Maybe I can get a picture to show you on Wednesday! :D

Oh Alee, I am so happy for you. I would go with the mare unless you have a whole lot of time on your hands....it takes so much time and effort to break and school a foal....and will be quite some time till you can actually enjoy riding her. But the mare sounds like she is good to go from now.....quite an investment. I would suggest that you have a pre-purchase exam done before buying and perhaps you could set up a deal that would let you work with her for a few weeks before committing. It is a huge step and not every horse is the right horse for every rider....believe me, I have bought some horses that I thought would work out....and just were not the best match. But she does sound lovely and I am so pleased that you can do this! Happy riding. I am sure you are so excited!!!

Keep Smiling.....Bev

Thanks for the advice everyone.

The mare is currently undergoing vet care for Pigeon Fever. Poor girl. I will leave which ever one I buy at the farm so they will continue to be "in charge" of them as I am not quite ready for that yet.

I worked with the mare all last summer so I know our personalities will mesh nicely. She really is a sweet girl. I will give you an update tomorrow!

How exciting Alee!!!! With Nora being so little I would go for the mare too. I love being able to ride and get time away from my kids for awhile. It really charges me and makes me a better mama.

Well I went and spent the evening at the Ranch yesterday. Right now it looks like I might be getting the filly. The ranch owners said they can't in good conscience sell me the mare at this time because of the Pigeon Fever. Last year when she was pregnant she got and this year she is pregnant and has it again. None of the other horses have come down with it (Thank Goodness!!), but the vets aren't sure why she keeps getting it and if she will continue to get it.

So until we get this Pigeon Fever this figured out, I am leaning towards the filly. We talked about expenses, training (for me and the filly), boarding, and such last night. So I thought you might like to see her? Here she is as a weanling around 3 months old. She is Straight Egyptian Arabian and wonderfully sweet!

I am so glad you ladies like her too! She has a heart of gold and is really a people horse. Notice that she was posing in a huge grass field without a halter on! The way this ranch handles their babies makes them respectful and sweet. They recognize humans as the dominate in the partnership without fear or anger. Oh and she will eventually become a bright bay. The light color on her legs will shed out and turn black by the time she is a yearling.

I got to go visit her yesterday and she is so darling! She was curious but not afraid of Nora even though Nora was in the Snugli pack (front carrier) with blankets and such. She just respectfully sniffed her and let me pet her. There was plenty of room for her to shy away since we were in a large box stall. I think I am in love!!

Thank you very much Bev! She is the first foal that is sired by HS Infinte who was sired by Simeon Sadik. Simeon Sadik is an AMAZING stallion that is owned by Halsdon Arabians in England and was bought and imported from Austrailia for 1 million dollars! So I am really interested to see what Simeon Sadik's grand daughter will do!! :)

Simeon is on the second page of stallions- He is the gorgeous black one...
