I'm wondering if anyone has any tricks that have worked for them to avoid getting tomato worms. It's a little late for this year but these little worms just gross me out and they do a nasty job at eating up the tomato plants and the tomatos that are trying to get ripe. I am generally good at spotting them when they're on the plant but I've got to have someone around to get them off and kill them because I just can't bring myself to get close to them. I think this is the only insect that I just can't stand, I don't care for spiders and such but they don't freak me out like this guy does...lol

Any ideas are more than welcome!

Last year I had a few of these so I looked up on the internet to see what I could do about them. I found two different things - one said that dill would keep hornworms away from my tomatoes, the other thing said that dill and tomatoes are not good companion plants.

So, since I didn't know which one to believe, I decided to try it and see. This year I found 5 tomato hornworms, all in one night, I picked them all off and haven't had any more damage, so maybe I got them all.

But the dill didn't seem to scare them away. So, I looked in a few more places, and I found out that dill is a good trap plant for these buggies. Seems that the scent ATTRACTS the moth so she will lay her eggs.

So I think what that means is that you should plant your dill far away from the tomatoes, and hopefully the hornworms will hatch in your dill patch and stay away from the tomatoes....

That's an interesting idea, I will remember that one for next year! Thank you for your idea :)

I found two about a week ago in my parent's garden and was gone for about a week only to come back and see evidence of a few more but they've been hiding really well and I haven't been able to find them yet.

Last year I had a hard time spotting them. This year I used Propex fabric remnants in my garden, like Mary Jane recommends in her book, and I found them right away because their droppings were basically right underneath where the bug was. The droppings really showed up on the fabric.
