A Farm of My Own:  grain arrangements?  |

So, it's harvest in the Palouse. Which means lots of grain trucks, all the fields of golden grain are going to be dusty and brown soon. Lots of dirty, tired, hungry folks.
This is the first harvest for the "farm" (30 acres) we bought, and although we lease out the farm ground, I can't help but feel proud looking over the 15 acres of barley produced there. DH cut a hunk of it and tied it with a rope to commemorate our first crop. Do any of you have some ideas about how to arrange/display grain?
We also now have a second home at the farm. A gift from my dad, he brought it up from Mexico last month! Can't wait to go camping at the farm in the 1975 Airstream!

That is so cool Michelle! What a great old Airstream!
You could make a grapevine wreath and use the grain as a center point in the wreath or something like that. Or you could soak some of the stems to get them pliable and then braid the stems and make a wall hanging.

Thank you ladies! I'll have to give those a try. I'm hoping we can get water and power out to the trailer by the end of the month. But I just can't wait for a night out there! I'll bet I do a dry camp run before the week is up. :) It's only 6 miles from home, so I can come back for a shower. :)

The Palouse is one of my favorite places. We lived in Colfax for 8 years, and have have family that farm in the Steptoe/St. John area....We have very little wheat left in the Yakima Valley, so my heart tends to skip a beat when I see or hear about wheat harvest :) I was also intregues by your "huckelberry wine name" how did that come about?.... living in wine country, every freind is a wine maker ( except me, the grapes I grow are organic raisin grapes and I just have a few plants), but, if I were to make wine, I think I would like to try the strawberry wines and Huckelberry wines.. as no one around here are doing those......

Hi Rene! Yep, I'm an amateur winemaker. I've got a huckleberry going I just started last week, and a strawberry/honey that I began around the end of June. We're kindred spirits! Spirits...he he.
I made a gallon of huckleberry last year, and it was incredible! I'll have to post a picture. Gorgeous color, and the flavor! My best wine hands down. It just doesn't compare to what I've bought at the store called "huckleberry wine". Ew. The recipe I use yields an honest huckleberry flavor, and so smooth!
I hope you do try the huckleberry wine, if you decide to give in and try winemaking yourself. Jack Keller is an excellent internet source for recipes and advice.

:) Yep. Luckily, the bear thing happened when I was about done anyway. I had hoped to take a few friends up for a last pick, but I would feel awful if we had to contend with bears. I think early July is better, at least in my favorite spot.
