Oxy Clean works for me.. I have the spray bottle and the powder you dump in with the water. I use the powder for every load but my whites cuz I use bleach in thoses. And if I see a stain I'll spray that as well.

I've been using Kirk's Castile soap that you can order here http://www.kirksnatural.com/barsoap.html and it's 52.32 plus 6.95 for shipping. You may be able to get it cheaper by the case if you know a store that carries it and they can get you a case, the store near me sells it for 99 cents a bar for the scented then you don't pay the shipping. I prefer the unscented so I can scent it however I want without the extra scent and for some reason they can't get that for me at the store.

I don't know if it's just me, but since using the soap, I've felt itchy. Not real bad just here and there, off and on. Could one of the 3 ingredients be irritaing? Should I use less of say, the borax or washing soda? Is Kirks Castil gentler than Fels? I've washed almost everything, my sheets and jeans and shirts this week so I don't know... Maybe I'll just have to get used to the different soap. Maybe it's not for sensitive skin. But I've been using regular Tide all these years, so....

Just trying to bounce off ideas here..

Elise- How much are you using per load?

Yes, Kirk's Castile should be more gentle to skin than the Fels.

I use between 2-3 Tbps depending on the load, I mean how soiled the clothes are..

I'm using the recipie from Aunt Jenny... I think... 1 cup of bar soap, 1/2 cup for the rest.

That seems right on target. Are you sure it is from the laundry detergent and not climate? Another thing you might consider is using homemade soap instead of store bought soap. My clothes come out much softer that way.

I made my first batch of the liquid laundry soap and started using it about 3 weeks ago. We love it! My DH started telling me how much softer his clothes were the first week. I thought he was kidding but it looks like he's right. I shared some with my DD last week and she's convinced too.
I had the hardest time finding the washing soda but finally found it at Rosauers. So I bought extra.

I am going to make my first batch on Friday. Ironically, the dryer repairWOMAN is coming first thing.
The dryer spins and blows air, just not hot air. Probably doesn't work, from not being used since May. LOL

I tried making my own detergant probably five years ago, and then just didn't make after the batch ran out. Too lazy I guess.
I can't remember if I liked it or not.
Will let you know after I try it out.

I have been using Alee's laundrey soap recipe and it works wonderful. I have been using vinegar in the rinse and do not use dryer sheets any longer either. Get this: I told some co-workers about this and they want me to make batches for them to buy from em, I offered the recipe so they could amke it themeselves, funny, I would have asked for the recipe b4 asking them if I could buy it from them?????

I have a question: does any of the ingredients contain anything that will fade clothes, like a bleach can? If I remmeber Alee's recipe correctly, its baking soda, washing soda, borax, boraxo hand powder.

Kim- The liquid recipe is to just dissolve the same recipe in hot (boiling) water. Then add gallons of water. literally! The powdered for me so much easier.

And no, none of the ingredients in the powder should have the ability to lighten clothes.

Elise,
I had a bad break out from adding borax to my loads a couple years ago.
I made Aunt Jenny's recipe except cut the borax in half.
So far so good, I may up it slightly the next batch and see how it goes.

One thing I worry about farmgirls is if you have a septic tank will the vinegar kill the bacteria in it that is needed to break down the solids in the septic tank? I got a downey ball and have used it with the vinegar, but I do worry about the septic tank. The clothes come out wonderful, no static. As soon as my laundrey soap runs out I'm going to try your reciepe Alee.

I found several sites that say that vinegar, as dilute as it is going to get in your septic is fine. Commercial cleaners, detergents and Bleaches will do much more harm.

I have tried it! So far so good.
I made the powdered version.
I used one bar of Fels, and two bars of ivory. (Kirk's makes me break out) I let them air/dry out for a few days before I grated them. After I grated them, I whirled them in the food processor, so they are itty-bitty tiny little grains of soap.
All three bars made around four cups of soap, and then I added the borax and soda accordingly. I am trying the vinegar for softenin too-but have to say I love my Method softener a lot, so that my be hard to give up.

I just use HOT water in an old water canteen and pour the soap in there and shake it up before I add it to the wash water.
The water in my town doesn't like powdered detergent much.

Does anyone know, what did ladies use before commercial detergent like Tide or All was invented?

Kate- most women washed with homemade laundry soap much like what we make if they had the materials, if they didn't have the materials, they just washed with the homemade soap they made. Most homemade soaps destined for laundry have a higher lye content in the ingredients so they come out a bit dryer and harder.

Thnaks Alee, that bleach issue was weighing on my mind. I think I will stay with the poweder, liquid sounds too messy.

I put my powder directly into the water while the washer is filling up and shwish it around with a long wooden paint stirrer, however sometimes I put my hand in to do the swishing as it makes my hands feel soft afterwards.

Thanks Karen for the tip. I made some with hotel soap that didn't irritage, which Alee said is just detergent and not soap, lol... Oh well, clothes still came clean! I'm waiting for Ms. Alee to make me some soap and I'm going to try with that too. I made another batch with the Fels and CAREFULLY measured the borax and soda, so maybe I was off with the first batch (shrug) I'll be using that this week..

If it's still irritaing I will try with half the borax...

Okay ladies, I am on load five with my new laundry powder. I am so excited about the results! I wonder why I stopped making my own before.

I went out and bought more supplies for the next batch, even though the stuff I have now will last for another three months at least.
Isn't it funny how for the price of one large bottle of regular detergant, you can make your own 3-6 months supply for less?
PLUS while buying the supplies, I needed more vinegar and Cub had their gallon sized for $1.59 per bottle. I grabbed two!!
I say it is providential.

I may even make some for my best friend.

Pat, I just use a cheese grater. Like the kind for Parmesan. You put the bar in and just turn the handle. I got mine at Target for around $5.

Pat,
I made the powder version.

I just used my "bell" grater on the parmesan side.
Take the wrappers off your soap and let them dry out for a while first.
I think it helps with grating and soluaibility (sp?-is that a word??)in your washer.
After grating I whirled all of the ingredients together in my food processor.
