Hi Laurie-

The reason not to use the hand washing soap in the dishwasher or washing machine is because it can suds over. Washing machine and dishwasher soap is low sudsing so the agitation won't cause foam. Hand dishwashing soap isn't low sudsing- in fact- it's pretty high suds.

I just use my normal pots and pans to make liquid laundry soap. Just rinse well in the sink before sticking in the dishwasher and you will be fine :D

Dishwasher! what's that. Oh right, it's called my right and left hands. ha! I was thinking more about the laundry soap we make. Why can't you use that on your dishes or can you?

Laurie - I make soap in my big stainless steel soup pot. I make soap in the summer and soup in the winter. We haven't died yet and the soap is just fine.

P.S. Don't make soap in aluminum pots; only in stainless steel or enamelware without chips.

Hi Laurie-

Some people have trouble with the hand soap that goes into the laundry soap leaving a little bit of a film on hard surfaces- like glasses.

First batch of Laundry soap.
I didn't have any laundry bar soap, but I did have some OLD decorative soaps (about 7 yrs old!)

So I grated them, ended up with about 2 cups
Added 2 cups of washing soda
and 1 cup borax (went lighter on this as I have broke out before)
and 1/2 cup baking soda
and about 30 drops of Lavender EO

I washed towels this afternoon and I'm very pleased!
I think this will be somethng I do from now on.
Thanks for all the info and inspiration!

I love making the gelled laundry soap. I've been making it with Zote because I can buy the bars for a dollar a bar at the general dollar store. This week I'll be making batch number 4.

That's awesome Trace! I am going to be making more this weekend as well! Don't you love how it makes your clothes feel? The best ever! I even got my husband who is the epitome of convience and convention drive to accept the homemade stuff and he likes it too (now)!

I recently made a batch of "washing minerals". I saw that someone was selling this mixture on Etsy and just decided to do it myself. It is simply a box of Borax, a box of Washing Soda, and a small container of Oxy Clean. It does not include the grated soap. Because we have hard water and castille soap leaves a reside in my tub, I didn't want to take a chance on having it clog up my washer. I also just didn't like the thought of ripping up my knuckles on the cheese grater.

I used the washing minerals on sheets and clothes this weekend...the fabric came out clean and incredibly soft! And static free! And making it was so easy. This probably won't work as well for heavily soiled clothing, but if you don't want to use grated soap in your laundry detergent, this seems to work quite well.

Alee, I love NOT having to pay for all the extra crap they throw into the conventional detergents. Especially not having to pay for WATER as an ingredient, LOL and not having all that extra packaging to recycle is a big boon to making my own.
I just love how this gel stuff melts into the wash water.

Then you can add essential or scent oils, a little oxyclean or whatever. That is the powdered version. To make it a liquid (more like a gloppy gel...you pour boiling water over the grated soap, then add the other ingredients after it cools...stir and keep in a covered container. For exact amounts if you need them I think they are on this thread somewhere back a ways. I hope this helps Lorri..it works great.

Powdered laundry soap:
1 cup of grated bar soap (fels naptha or Zote work great) be sure to grate very fine...like parmesan cheese..almost to a powder
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup oxyclean (optional)
You can add powdered water softener if you think you need it..I don't
add essential oil for scent if you like...lavender or rosemary are wonderful
use 1/8 cup per load.

It isn't at every store I am finding. Our local walmart didn't have it this last time I shopped for supplies either..but the grocery store did. It will be next to the Borax, Biz and that sort of thing..usually on a top shelf. It is made by Arm and Hammer usually and is a box about like Biz comes in and says WASHING Soda. I don't think you can sub baking soda...although maybe you can. Anyway...good luck..I bet another store will have it for ya.

No, you can't substitute baking soda for Washing Soda. They are in the same family but are processed differently and so do two different jobs. Washing Soda is often in a yellow box. Or you can order it online at places like www.soapsgonebuy.com

Hey Beverley- I found some at JayC... not sure if you have a JayC in Michigan or not, but the store is owned by Krogers, so you may find it there. Good Luck!

Jenny, thank you so much for this! It sounds a lot like the stuff I've been buying from a wahm to use to wash our babies' cloth diapers. I've always thought I could do it myself, but while I've found lots of recipes for liquid laundry soap, this is the first powdered I've come across. (and fitting that this should be my first MJF post - saying thank you for a homemade laundry soap recipe)

Thanks again!
Best Wishes!
