We've had West Nile Virus here in IL for the past several years. I would check with your local hospital to see if any cases of the disease have been reported in your area. To my knowledge, we haven't had any cases reported this year. We did lose a large percentage of our bird population, blackbirds & blue jays, to the virus. Try to not go outside in the early morning & early evening. That's when the mosquitoes are at their worst. I hope you're okay!

It is VERY rare despite what the media will make you think. I live in AR surrounded by rice fields so the mosquitos are REALLY bad here. If you walk outside after dusk your skin can literally get COVERED with them. I am usually covered from head to toe. I have never gotten nor has anyone else in this area. I think there was only 1 case reperted in all of AR last year. You should be fine.

Thanks ladies! I know it's rare just paranoid. I know about those skeeters in AR - my Uncle owned a rice farm in Brinkley and I remember going there as a kid!

No symptoms just don't want any!

I think it is good to be aware. I think they recommend wearing long sleeves and long pants. Also citronella EO should help deter the little buggers too. :)

the Bergamot oil seems to work well too! the skeeters in this part of OK seem to be more active then the ones in KS -- go figure. Of course Fort Irwin was nice cause there were very few!

We have it in this area, so we are extra careful and always put some sort of repellent on when ever we go outside for any length of time. Our neighbor lost a horse last year to it so we were sure to get our mini horse and donkey protected this year. So ya, I'm really scared of it myself! Take care, Lu

We have West Nile Virus in Canada too...so far in Manitoba there have been 7 confirmed cases this summer. Like a lot of other illnesses, the elderly seem to react to it worse than younger people. I've heard that the symptoms are like the symptoms of the common cold, and you usually feel better after a few days. There has been a lot of speculation from different medical professionals who figure that nearly 1 in 10 people in Manitoba actually contract WNV from an infected mosquito, but most people never display any symptoms. I haven't taken any chances...I stay covered up at dawn and at dusk.
Speaking of mosquito-borne illnesses, did anyone read the article in National Geographic the other month about Malaria? It sounds a whole lot worse than West Nile Virus.

I didn't read the National Geographic article, but my father-in-law contracted malaria when he was a young man. My husband's family is from Iran. His dad got the disease about 60 years ago. It has plagued him his entire life.

I'm sorry to hear West Nile Virus made it to Canada. Everyone please be careful when working in the yard. The garden can wait until it's later in the morning when they're not around!
