We have a 20 foot tepee in our back yard this summer. We normally only set it up when we are at a mountain man rendezvous re-enactment. This summer we decided to use it more. My sis and her DH from Denver came to visit and they wanted to stay in it. We set up the interior as a Sioux dwelling, according to historical research we have done.
They had quite an experience and talk about it often.

That sounds like fun! Do you go to the Fort Bridger Rendezvous? I am going to be having some friends selling soaps and such for me there this year!

No tepee, but last summer we built a bender in the back yard. Isn't it fun to be the odd ones in the neighborhood?!

I don't have a tepee but a 14X12 wall tent set up. DH and I do French and Indian War re-enactments. We also cook most of our meals outdoors using dutch ovens and a firepit. We also have a propane cookstove and BBQ pit on the patio. Food is just better when you cook it outdoors. We have the tent set up only temporarily. We just bought it and wanted to get the hang of setting it up before we head up to Fort William Henry on Lake George in NY this September. Anyone going to the big rendevous? They expect over 1,000 re-enactors will be there for the 250 anniversary of the Battle that started the French and Indian War. It's going to be a blast! Everyone is welcome and it's open to the public. Lots of handmade/homemade crafts being displayed and sold. I've tried to attach a link that explains the weekend but for whatever reason it's not attaching properly for me. If you would like info just email me. I'd love to meet some of you Farmgirls from the area or you re-enactor Farmgirls!

The are my father-in-law to be's neighbors. And right now for some reason I am blanking on the guy's first name and their last name- but her name is Sue and she does quilts and they are from Worland.

A bender is a bent pole structure covered with straw, reeds, moss, or canvas. We opted for canvas (actualy hubby opted for canvas), but it was still way cool. The kids loved to take their naps in it and on weekends we all camped out. We did almost all of our cooking over the campfire in the backyard and just had a great time. I am so greatful that all of my children were old enough to remember this great time with their daddy. He was only home for a few weeks last summer and those weeks were used in such a wonderful way.
BTW-- I would love to get involved with reinactments. Maybe when the children are older we can do it as part of school...kind of living history.

Let me think.. how did it go..?
Well it was probably for Father's day.. But is was like the description of a father.. So it said..
FATHER ; ( & it had a couple descriptions of a father..) then there was a really sweet statement.. Something like..
"My Father.. the only man I know who could take us camping a million miles away in our own back yard"
I'm sure that's not it exactly.. but it was really so sweet...
Oh jeez.. now I'm going to have to go back & get the dang thing!!

Sherone, try to google www.fiw250.iloveny.com there is a whole years worth of events going on, but we will be going September 14-16 to Fort William Henry. The french and Indian reenactments sound about the same as your mountain man ones. Alot of the ones we go to range in years from 1700-1840 at the same re enactment. They just expect you to pick a particular time period and be that period correct in your camp, dress, activities, etc. We also have hawk throws and blackpowder shoots, skillet toss for the ladies, Saturday nights we have a huge pot luck supper with everyone providing a period correct dish to eat. We even have the candy cannon and games for the kids. I hope we can meet sometime at a rendevous. do you ever travel to attend events or do you just stay local?
Corrine, your bender is pretty cool. I've never seen one. When things settle down for you, I think it would be great for you to join a re-enactment. It really does teach living history to kids and they get to dress up and learn how kids lived way back when.
