I was wondering if any of you have ever taken an old out building on your farm and turned it into a business? My DH and I are in the process of doing that right now. As a retired couple with two little ones still at home (At least they are now both in school! HA) we feel that we need to see other adult people. We both love to go to auctions and yard sales so decided to turn that love into a business. It's been a long year but our building is now complete and filled to the brim with vintage and unique junk. (Note the key word is "junk", not wonderful pristine antiques!!! HA) We hope to have the sign up and the door open by this fall. I was wondering if anyone else has ever done this and if so how it is going. In our case we don't need to make a lot of money but rather we want to meet other people who share our love of old things. If you have done this, I would love to hear from you and share decorating ideas.

Hi Sher, I don't have a building yet but have plans ordered and will be building it next spring. It will be my "store". My daughter and I take vintage and "junk" items and redo them. Lots of cottage type stuff. Missy used to have store but had to close it for health reasons. So now we get together with two other friends and have a boutique sale every 3 months. It goes really well as we keep a mailing list and send out postcards. But when I get my building done we will be open about 4 days a week. I'm in the process of researching growing flowers and lavender to that I can offer fresh flower bouquets too. We'll do soaps and body care plus eggs and my handmade purses and aprons. We know we're not going to get rich but enjoy it because our things bring happiness and joy to other people. Our customers used to say that when they'd walk into our store they could just feel all the stress leave their body and they never wanted to leave! That was the biggest compliment we could have gotten!! Good luck with your venture. Let me know how it goes. Feel free to email me so we can chat more.

I'm so very blessed to know Sher as a kindred friend, she is truly a warm and wonderfully down to earth lady! And their shop is amazing as I've been privilaged to see pics and can honestly say that Sher is so right when she says it's "full to the brim"! That it truly is and with such fun goodies too! LOL
Sher and her husband find the most wonderful vintage treasures and she has a real knack at displaying each new find. I'm excited for her and DH on opening their shop and only wish I lived close enough to join in the fun of helping them and enjoying her delightful cooking and baking skills too!

Very best of luck Sher, ya know I'm one of your biggest fans! Love ya! Ü

Hello Everyone! Ok, I can use all the help I can get so you all hop a plane/train or car and get down here!!!! HA Karen, we are fairly close...LeRoy is about an hour South of Topeka on Highway 75! "Old Crow Farm" isn't offically open but we still let people go through and are starting to sell things. If any of you are ever in our neck of the woods, please do stop by...I'll treat to lunch, let you tour my shop and if you have the time we'll run over to Arnold's, one of the biggest greenhouses in the state of Kansas!!! Hugs to all!

I'm going next May!! Flying in and driving a U-haul home filled to the brim with treasures. I've also seen lots of pics of Sher's shop and goodies. The shop is so pretty and displayed beautifully! She definitely has a gift for chosing what to put together.

Hey Kim, Come on over, the coffee is on! I'd like to all meet up in LeRoy and check out Sherry's new shop! The Missouri gals could come too! We could make it a "Illinois/Missouri/Kansas Farmgirl Field trip? Have a picnic? Whadaya say??? When are you leaving Kansas Kim? Will you still be here Labor Day weekend?

Geez -- I wish I could come now!!! In fact, Sher has been sending me info about the area where she lives. Just entertaining the idea of moving to a different state where it's not so expensive to own a home! Jenny I would definitely stop in Salina -- Missy will be with me too.

They are giving away free land in Kansas??? I can't believe that. I briefly looked at the website and will really check it out later tonight. I have been wanting to move somewhere less expensive to live for the last 5 years. The home prices in Clark County are now at a median price of $230,000! And if you want any land you will pay at least $300,000 for about 5 acres plus a house. There is a gorgeous old farmhouse outside of town that sits on 10 acres and it is selling for $750,000. At these prices we will not be able to afford to buy again here. And with Steve retiring in 15 years so our goal is to find something what we can have paid off by then. My family lives in Central IL and I always thought that was the place we'd go. But I'm open to moving to other places too -- especially someplace where I might be able to get free land!

Does the word "Gathering" start to come to mind??? If any of you are interested, we could start making plans to meet at my house on a date that would be good for everyone. We could all stay here (Some of us might have to sleep on the floor but I don't think that would kill anyone!)and I'll do some major cooking. From here we can hit all the high spots around and shop until we drop. If you'd like to and we could all be here on a Monday, I'd even take you to our Sale Barn and you could pick up your own treasures! Let me know what you think!

I will be coming through Kansas, but I don't know when yet. My daughter is moving in with us when her hubby deploys to Iraq and I will fly out to Kentucky and help her drive back "out west". A pit stop in KS sound like such a great idea. It probably won't be until October.
