Michelle-aka Huckleberrywine and I met today! She is such a sweet and fun lady!

We met at the Pullman library and then drove to a berry spot I know past the Lower Granite Dam. It was so much fun! I love the drive and the weather was perfect!

Some of the berries had been sunburnt in the heat wave, so there was not as many as I thought there would be, but there was still plenty! Oh my! I think I have about 2 gallons of berries sitting here! And next weekend I get to met Carol Sue and Teresa and go berry picking with them!

Anyway, Michelle and I walked up the ravine with Nora and my dog Sky. We picked lots of berries, talked about everything under the sun, and when we had decided it was getting a bit too hot- we decided to drive to the down river side of the damn to see the spillway. It was so much fun to see the damn.

I had a wonderful day and only got a minimal sunburn! :)

Hugs!

Rats, missed meeting Michelle though.
Sitting here sweating and sewing. Hmmmm, what a combination.
Have a great weekend.

Carol Sue-

It was lots of fun! I can't wait till next weekend to meet you and Teresa! I think it will be so much fun! And there are so many berries left! We could have spent all day picking if we wanted to! I am certainly going to bring some clippers though! Some of the best berries are hiding behind some new growth and these things need some good trimming! LOL

I feel like a blackberry leprechaun over my pot o'...blackberries. You gals are going to have a great time. Alee and Nora are absolutely so much fun to spend time with. It was a constant smile day.

If you get a chance to bring a pole with a tin can nailed to the end, it would help you get those tantalizing berries out of reach. Pg. 269 in the Ideabook has a picture of one similar to what Alee and I discussed.

Jenny-

I wonder if I dehydrated some of these berries- if they would grow for you? I would be willing to send you a black berry start or dehydrated berries if you wish. Considering how lustily those bushes were growing- I bet a start woudl grow really easily and survive great in the mail.

Maybe if you dried the berries, and then Jenny, give them a good soak for about a week in some wine, then dump them where you want them to grow. I think the alcohol breaks down the seed coat. That's pretty much how I got my raspberry bushes. I don't know how to grow blackberries from cuttings, but maybe someone else here does.

(wiping corners of mouth) Mmmm. Yep. Last night had a few handsful, tonight is cobbler night. I have a dentist appt. tomorrow, and you know how these berries stain and leave seeds. Wonder if I can suck on a lemon? Or should I just take her a few?

How about you?

I was finishing off the Blackberry tarts that I made from the batch that Doug and I picked on the 4th. I had a couple of handfuls today though! They are so addicting! Yum! I want to make sure that I freeze and dry enough to have some throughout the winter!

I need a good food dehydrator! LOL

Sounds wonderful..I will try anything!!!!
Blackberry tarts..oh my!!!! I made blackberry jam all the time I was growing up with my grandma and it is my favorite for sure..nothing like it. I make some each year without fail even if I have to buy storebought frozen berries.
I have two old round yardsale dehydrators Alee..got them cheap. check thrift stores and the like..mine are the Ron-co type that were sold on infomercials awhile back. eAsy to use and clean and I have had both for over 10 years..I do alot of jerky and dry herbs in them too. If I see another at a yard sale or thrift store I will grab it for ya. I wish I had one of the nice big ones..but these work well for now. eAsy to store too.

You know Alee, we're so hot and dry right now you could use the sun to dry your berries.

Wash and your berries, spread them out on cookie sheets, cover with a light fabric cover just to keep bugs off, and they should be done pretty quick. (Bring them in overnight if it takes more than one sunny day.) There's a formula to use to figure out exactly how dry in my Ball Blue Book, but my explanation began to look like algebra so I closed the book. You'll know when they are dry enough.

We make a difference.
