I was just sitting here reading & daydreaming  about all the wonderful farm girl decorated clothes pins I will be receiving soon and realized I do not have a clothes pin bag for them.
Then I got to thinking of the ones my mom & the other military wives use to have. Mom's was the standard blue & white striped fabric (called pillowticking-used to make pillow cases).
But my favorite one was my Grandma Baker's (not related, we just called her that) her's was like a little girls dress  .It had lace and buttons & the neckline was the opening for the clothes pins.
So,,, that being said, I think I will dig threw my fabric container and try to sew one up before my machine & the rest of my crafting supplies gets packed away befor the movers get here.... oh dear, I feel crafting withdrawals coming on!!!!! Breath Grace Breath!

Hi Grace-
What a great memory! My mom didn't hang our clothes out on a line, but my nanny and her sister did. I don't really remember much about their clothes pin bags, I think they were either the pillowticking or just plain white. I hope you show us a picture when you get done making you bag! :)

Our was probably purchased at a Kmart or something. Nothing fancy. Our house had a three story porch on it and the clothesline went from the third story out to the top of a birch tree. It was REALLY high and it was awful when you dropped something cause you had to truck all the way down the stairs and back up to get it!

My mom never hung out clothes, but my grandma always did. Her clothespin bag was blue and white striped ticking with a metal thing that folded over around the clothesline..and it had something simple embroidered on it..but I can't remember what. It was really really faded..she used that same one my whole childhood.

cloth .. feedsack one .. then later .. she went to a 'more modern' pattern .. but still a cloth clothespin bag. great memories!

i have a small collection of olde clothespin bags .. and 'hangin' on the line' stuff and 'olde ironing stuff. i think it is those childhood memoreis that led me to collect these things. i also have lots of early 1900's to 1950's laundry products.

| One of my favorite memories is of sitting with my Mom outside while she put clothes on the line. She had a clothespin bag that was made out of flour sacks like her kitchen towels.After she hung the laundry we would lay in the grass together and find shapes and objects in the clouds!! I have 2 different bags that I use, one is a half apron with very deep pockets that I wear and the other hangs on the line and is shaped like a dress with sunflowers all over it. |

ok, I could not resist, so I dug out the pillow case that I bought over @ the Goodwill store, for .90cents, and made a clothes pin bag. I used scrap trim & buttons too.
Check it out on my blog. Now I have something to store my hand decorated clothes pins in.
Ta-Da!!!!

I need to make a new one for myself. I keep selling or giving them as gifts. The one I am using now is more like a canvas nail bag than a clothespin bag..not very cute. I will make one with a cow on it no doubt!! In honor of my Mona. I just finished one for Kate's birthday embroidered with strawberries and green ric-rac trim.

Oh Grace! You crack me up! Right in the middle of the "move of your life", pulling out things you already packed to create more! I don't know how you do it ALL! It's all nervous energy....I am getting antsy for the big move but am in a holding pattren, at least until Wednesday then all heck breaks loose!
Actually, after tonites last little sewing project I am putting my machine away so that I do not get tempted to start any other projects!!!!
Got company coming for dinner on Monday so I will start preparing the food late Sunday afternoon.
I am making my version of "Saurbraten & Knodles" -in english- tart gravy & potato dumplings. yum!
On the 8th my husband's office is having a BBQ for him then the packers come on the 11th & 12th, my retirement party @ work is the 12th, on the 13th the trucks come to get our household belongings, my car & our 1954 Chevy Bel Air. Then on the 14th is one more BBQ with my volunteers. The 15th we spend our last day in our home and catch our breath before leaving on the 16th. OK, now I really need a really big martini!!!!!LOL!

Yes, I think I need a martini after listening to all that is coming your way. It will go quickly. Gonna go check out your blog. I think Grandma's was made out of tick, I remember making it ride down the clothesline when she didn't have the laundry on it and the sound it would make. Funny the things your remember.

I'm already thinking about making another one, but more durable for outside. 'course I will have to wait till I get up to Spokane, I promised my hubby I would pack my machine & sewing/crafting stuff away after tonights last project.
I wonder if there is a 12-step program for craftaholics!!!

Ok, so, maybe the 12 step program will not help us....teeheehee,,,actually I can live with being a craftaholic,,,& after nearly 35 years my husband is use to seeing beads, lace, glue sticks etc all over the house.

| My mom had a little dress clothespin bag like you described. She actually went through a whole series of clothes pin bags. She was always leaving the bag out on the line and between the rain and the sun beating down on them, they didn't last long. They would start to deteriorate at the bottom, and before you knew it, all the pins would burst through. I learned, from watching her, to always bring my bag in when I brought my clothes in dry. |
