Well, it is official....plastic grocery bags are banned in San Francisco. I think this is the wave of the future....so I have started producing re-usable canvas grocery bags.....and not plain ones but fancy ones!! Here are two one is big and one for just a small trip to the store (or for use on the beach or wherever....)
 
I am going to sell these on Etsy. (I have one on Ebay to see if that sells better....we'll see!)

Those are great...I use the string bags but they do have a problem holding boxes, etc. I invariably get poked in the legs.
I believe I read that in Ireland (not 100% aure on the country) that a law was ppassed which required stores to charge patrons for each plastic bag used, which cut bag use considerably. |

Those are great! Good luck with them on your etsy site.
I use my large market baskets, and my boat and tote from LL Bean. It's VERY heavy duty, and I love that I only make a couple trips from the car to the house.
It was the same in England (about purchasing the bags)...makes sense, right? We don't ever have to pay for anything, really--we, as a country, are VERY reliant on cheap and easy = throw away and buy again. If we had to pay money for bags, I can guarantee people would bring their own, or go with paper!

Gorgeous bags!!!!!
I just bought fabric to make my own this week, since a group has already petitioned the Seattle city council to make the plastic bags illegal as well. I've been thinking for a long time about going reusable, since it definitely fits my aesthetic better, and this was the shove I needed!
Made my 3-year-old hers first, since I wanted to test my pattern and I hate making a toile (I'm a lazy lazy farmgirl). It's fine, but the pattern recommendation for the interlining and the interfacing made it too handbag-y and not tote-y enough for me, although it's very sturdy. I also want to enlarge the pattern a bit, since I buy a lot of groceries, and I don't want to have to carry thirteen cloth bags with me to the store.
In the spirit of reusability I did steal a pair of handbag handles off an old purse that I never use, and my daughter adores the handles. For mine I'll just make the cloth handles like yours though.

I am not using a pattern....thus can make any size I like.....very easy....sew up the sides, square off the bottom (X 2 bags) Join bags right sides together with handles sandwiched and turn the whole thing inside out. Since the two bags are identical in size and shape it is completely reversible.....great way to use up scraps of fabric.

GREAT idea, gal pals! And a long time coming, wouldn't you say? Here in France, where we grocery shop, you must bring your own sacks, and grocery stores actually sell the really good large reinforced plastic sacks here, and when they ever wear out, they will take them back and sell another for only 1 euro. I see people either bringing the big reinforced sacks we have, or large baskets slung over their arms for their purchases. The small "mom and pop" stores still offer plastic sacks. But... GREAT IDEA! And the big chain grocery stores that still offer plastic sacks CHARGE a few cents for each, another great idea! People like me, certainly reuse these sacks for the bathroom wastebasket, etc. but think of the millions of sacks that are simply discarded......
We can either be part of the ongoing problem, or we can be part of the little by little solution. Makes sense, glad to see this post! Nance |

This is such good new ladies! I hope more and more places will start banning the plastic sacks, or requiring that the sacks be the biodegradable type. It is really neat to see some of your totes! And did you know MaryJane has canvas totes as well! I use mine for my groceries!

Gorgeous bags Bev!! One of my students made me a lovely quilted tote bag as an end of year present because she knows I appreciate handmade items and that I do not like to waste plastic either. I use it everywhere. I like the idea of reusable bags, and have to make some simple ones, but since I shop every two weeks, I will need a lot of them. I fill at least 12-15 plastic bags each time I shop, so I'd better do a few at a time.

Love your bags! SO are you going to make any more Princess Mater Bags? I am sorry I missed out on getting one of those.
As for plastic bags, I use them again for Yucky trash..... Anything that need to go right outside.... Soapmaking spills, Kitty box treasures.... and anything that would be considered a biohazard.

| Well, they look great!!!!!!... and since i spent my fun money on an apron from the one and only naomi michelle today,.... and I do have more fabric than I could possibly use before I die...i am only 30, so you get the idea...i am an addict...yes yes i know the first step is admitting the problem...oh and I do not intend to correct this problem...i love my addiction...I may need to go sew some up for myself...oh, but I do not do the grocery shopping for my family of 9...my darling husband does ALL of it!!! Can you see him with 2 cart loads of groceries, and handing the bag boy a tub full of beautifully sewn flowery reusable grocery bags...I would need to hide in aisle #4 to watch this scene!!! HA... I am going to do this!!! You are great Bev!!! |

Bev, what cute & practical bags.....I hope you sell a gazillion of them....then you will be MJF very own "baglady" LOL! 
I have several Trader Joe' bags that I re-use no matter what market I am in....
Jen, I do know that in Germany & Switzerland you must pay for shopping bags, and most people bring their own bags to market, but as of the last time I was there the department stores did not charge, only food markets..... I wonder if that has changed?
I like using cloth bags, the handles are more sturdy & they are washable. I even keep a "cooler bag" in my trunk for ice cream/meats etc.
I hope that other cities take a look @ San Francisco's stance on plastic bags. 
If I need a few things & have to pay a nickle for a bag 'cause I forgot mine, no biggie, but when I do major shopping I prefer my heavy duty canvas bags.
But I am thinking I need to get Chic' and make the plunger into farmgirl designer bags!!! 
I can hardly wait to get settled into our new home so I can get caught up on my shopping, I think I am starting to go through withdrawels!!!LOL!!!!

Your bags are just beautiful..I have a think about tote bags anyway, and try to keep some grocery size ones in the car to use when I shop. I think the banning of plastic bags SHOULD happen more places...it could make a REAL difference!!

I just noticed that Costco will no longer be "providing" plastic bags to their customers. I just have to remember to carry my fabric and crochet bags with me and actually take them into the store!

My local Costco doesn't provide bags, but they will pack stuff into boxes for you.
I need to stock up on totes! We just got back from the egrocery store and Wal-mart. I hate to say that we used plastic bags, but we did. But at least we will recycle them!
