We were just given four Muscovy drakes and the lady recommended making them a duck island to float out in the middle of the pond (for them to use at night for sleeping safe away from the coyotes.) Since the ducks are currently on their own down on the farm, we need to do this asap.

Has anyone made an island for their ducks? If so, what did you use and how did you make it? Or does anyone have any suggestions? I have the necessary requirements listed on my blog and some interesting suggestions so far, but I'm looking for a few more ideas... especially ones from folks with a successful duck island already in use.

Could you do something like a floating dock - something like a wood skid with floatation devices and then weights that hang down so it doesn't float to the shore.

That is what we are envisioning - but what to use as the floatation devices. I've had 55 gal. drums, plastic buckets, styrofoam and innertubes mentioned as suggestions, but where do I find these things?

oh, by the way, I have been told that coyotes can certainly swim and will still try to get my ducks even on an island... *sigh*
