My hubby and I are celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary on July 6th. For our honeymoon we went to Yellowstone and the Tetons. We want to take a trip in that area again to celebrate, but don't really want to see the same stuff or be in a crowded area. Do any of you have suggestions on interesting places to see in Idaho or Wyoming? We love quaint small towns or out of the way places. Southern Montana isn't totally out of the question either. Thanks.

I would highly suggest the Sheridan area, especially Story. It is absolutely beautiful there. There are some neat historic sites in the area and Deadwood isn't far (if you like gambling) You could travel up into Montana and see Custer Battlefield. (Also a beautiful area.)

| Be sure you see the Grand Tetons, up around Jackson WY. Most beautiful mountain range in the US in my opinion. |

Well there is the Big Horn Mountains around Worland, WY. The Largest Hot Springs in the world in Thermopolis Wyoming. You can walk a terraced pathway to see the big mineral deposits from the hot springs, or go swimming at the pools that are plumbed with the hot springs water!
In Idaho there is the LoLo canyon from Missoula, MT to Orofino. It is really beautiful. If you go that way you can go to Elk City, Idaho and vist the Red River Hot Springs which is lots of fun and out of the way. And you could come over to MaryJanesFarm!!

Lake Coeur d'Alene and Priest Lake in north Idaho are beautiful this time of year too.

Oh and the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody, WY is a great stop too! Lots of wonderful exhibits. It is truly a world-class museum.

Coeur d' Alene has the lake (which has boat cruises, parasailing, etc.) lots of antique stores and thrift shops, both in downtown and around the area. Post Falls, neighbors CdA and has five thrift shops, if you like thrifting! There are bed and breakfasts in town and around the area as well, although I have never stayed in any of them.
If you like historical sites or ghost towns, Bannick in Montana, as well as Virginia City and Nevada City, MT. We drove through there a few years ago because I wanted to see the cabins from the show "The Frontier House," which was the pbs tv show of the three families who went to live in the west as if they were from the late 1800's. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/frontierhouse/frontierlife/index.htm
The cabins had been moved to Virginia City after the show was over. I was pleasantly surprised to find a 'small' quaint town of old homes and stores and a hotel. We went through late on a Sunday afternoon, so everything was closed. I plan to go back someday! Parts of the town look as if the people just walked off and left things behind...There are muddy streets and all. They have a website: http://www.virginiacity.com/

Ok, I'm reading posts that I've missed and came across this one...
I live in Sandpoint, ID which is north of CDA.
This area is beautiful. Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced 'ponderay' for those who don't know)
is gorgeous and huge. It's supposed to be in the 100s this weekend, too.

I've mentioned this once a really long time ago..
But since your talking about it.. i just have to talk about MY experience once again!!! Alee will remember!
We live in Florida.. & I was sent to work out in Salt lake for about a month almost 3 years ago.. ( had to help train some new Agents..)
Well.. My Sweet Husband Flew in one Friday afternoon & we headed out 1st thing Saturday morning.. the crack of dawn from my Hotel Room.. To Yellowstone! So.. THAT day.. We were in Utah.. Idaho AND which? was it Wyoming? Now I am forgetting with out looking at the map.. but we came up from the bottom.. & we saw the Grand Tetons!! So amazing!!!
& We drove So high.. that we ran into snow on the ground.. Now.. us flat landers haven't seen snow in YEARS! So . of course we took pictures of each of us in the teeny bit of snow.. The mountains.. the Continetal Divide sign.. CLOUDS!! Everything!
Well.. us big dummies.. what did we know.. We had just gotten in the car & drove.. as far as we were concerend.. we were going to Yllowstone to see Old Faithful! So.. we did.. We drove straight there.. walked in to the most magnificent Lodge.. But it was Just hilarious.. we kept running into these hunters ALL along the roads we drove on.. It was 1st day of hunting season!!!
So when we areive at this beautiful Lodge.. Guess what THIS day was?? The LAST day they were open for the winter!!!
THIS.. was the very last nite they would be open!!!!!
How lucky was this???? So.. it was almost like a ghost town..
We got a room.. put our things away.. walked down to watch Old fathful for awhile.. went to the little food court place to get a bite to eat.. Shopped at the gift store.. Back out to watch Old Faithful some more.. & then to bed for the night!!
We got up SO early that next morning.. We left the lodge to head back to Utah again.. crack of dawn.. except that we actualy snuck up on dawn.. SHE wasn't even up yet really!!
We drove around Yellowstone for awhile.. loking for sights..& animals.. You have NO idea how alone you feel in Yellowstone the last day they will be there.. the 1st day of hunting season.. Wee hours of the morning when the sun is out there somewhere.. but still hasn't reached us yet because of the massive mountains she is hiding behind.. & all you see is hidden still under a shroud of fog..
& then everytime we braved opening the car door to go peek at some vista.. we could actualy SMELL.. that there had been an animal there.. & not so long ago.. ! I was in awe..
Well eventually yes.. we DID have to leave..
We went out a differnt direction though.. I think we went out the West side..& into.. Montana.. & we stopped at the very 1st little town there & had the best breakfast!
& then drove back through Idaho, Then on to Utah again..
So it was pretty funny Monday morning for us to be able to tell everyone at work that we had been in all 4 states On Sunday!!
At my office they all just thought we had done the most bizarre thing.. but they were all truly envious! & this is right there.. in their back yard!!
For my husband & I it was like a surprise 2nd Honeymoon..
& we saw some of the most brilliantb sights we'd ever seen.. The wildlife.. The mountains.. The WATERFALLS!!! Everything was just so amazing.. & though we didn't have much time to do it in..
We were able to squeeze so much in.. & had the most wonderful time!
ok.. Sorry to butt in.. just thought i'd add my 2 cents in too..
yes.. i LOVE that Region too!

I remember you telling us this story! And I remember thinking that you and your husband are really good at marathon driving trips! You are right- you came up through the Wyoming Side and exited on the Montana side. :)

Cynthia, my 2nd hubby proposed to me at Jenny Lake in the Teton's, so that has a special place in my heart.
Have you considered coming up to the Black Hills? I live in Custer and there a lot to see and do here and it's very relaxing as well. Not very farm from the WY border either - 15 mls. from my house to Newcastle and not that far to Devil's Tower (awsome!) and Sheridan. Could give you a really good tour of the Hills - off the beaten tourist path as well. This is God's country.
