jus' bought a dear little book yesterday (read it last night .. couldn't put it down!!) it's a 'young person's book .. but i just loved the way it read .. .it's called: JOURNEY CAKE .. by Isabel McLennan McMeekan .. copyright 1942.

a sweet story of a pioneer 'family' of six children (one is just a baby) .. who's father has gone from north carolina to KENTUCKY to settle .. he told his family to head there next summer when a wagon train was scheduled to leave.

meanwhile .. (boo-hoo) .. the momma dies shortly after the birth of her last baby .. and the dad doesn't know it. There is a wonderful olde black woman (JUBA) a freed slave .. and her husband Eli .. who have been with them for a long time ..

She decides to pack up the children and strike out on their own for Kentucky. The "JUDGE" in town .. declares NO she cannot go until the father returns to get them (sneaky little devil .. he knows they cannot make it through the winter on their own and is plotting to BUY Juba and Eli!

In the middle of the night .. they leave and the story is of their travels .. trials and tribulations and 'jubilations'.

Wonderful little story to teach children some of the 'pioneer ways'.

My sixth grade teacher read that book to us. She would read a chapter a day. I have always remembered loving the store even though that was many moons ago.
Where in the world did you find a copy?

Sometimes it's better or just as good to buy used books locally because once you add the shipping to the half.com or amazon books, they're not as cheap as they sound. I still use them alot when I can't find a book though.
