Hi Everyone! I was wondering if anyone had done crayon stitching. My mom (levisgrammy) and I are working on a quilt with my daughter. We traced coloring book pages and heat set the crayon wax and stitched the squares around the pattern. I was wondering if anyone familiar with this type of stitching would know if it would make a difference as to whether or not I used a regular crayon or a twistable crayon. I chose the twistable crayon and the wax smudged and didn't really heat well. Does it make a big difference if say I used crayolas instead?

Hi Jessie,
Use the crayons. They heat better. Make sure you iron is really hot. I have never had one smudge.

I'am a little confused. Not unusual. What are you doing here? Do you iron the paper you traced onto material?

Hi Nancy Jo,
Jess' mom here. We traced the pages onto squares of material then we used crayons to color the design in. We ironed the colored part to set the wax. We used these twist up type crayons that maybe don't contain as much wax as the regular old crayolas. I'm thinking that's why they smudged or something. I hope that is what Jess meant.
Sometimes Mom gets confused and way off base. :)

Yep!! That's what I meant. Just didn't know how to describe those goofy twist-up crayons. I am wondering also, is there a way to get the smudges out? I already have the blocks pieced together for the quilt top so it'd have to be a spot clean if I could do something. Hinds sights a good thing..next time crayolas!! :)

| I think it may have smudged because if you use steam or iron back and forth like you do for clothes that will make it smudge. You place iron on top hold, set, lift, hold, etc that is what will set it. If your crayons are washable type they will not work either. You cannot wash it out now if you set with iron also. Hope this will help you! There are fabric markers and crayons for this purpose they even sell them at my drug stores or wallmarts. Would still love to see photos.If you did use washable markers I think it will perhaps wash out anyway. |

I remember many years ago(when dinosuras walked the earth) you could buy special crayons for just this type of project. You colored the picture in the colorbook or what ever and then lay the picture color side down on fabric then you would iron the page. The heat melted the colored pictured onto the fabric. You had to remmember to the reverse the letters on your picture before you ironed it onto the cloth. I also found that you could color directly onto the fabric & then lay butcher paper over the coloring and apply heat with your iron to adhear the crayon wax.

wow, just had a thought, how cool it would be too trace your daughters hands/feet onto a tee shirt or better yet, a pastle APRON!!!!!

| yes, i have used those fabric crayons for this same thing. Just iron slowly and steadily and do not go back and forth. |

I totally forgot they have crayons for those sorts of things...lol...I haven't quite finished the quilt top but will try to post a pic when I have. I think it might have been the sliding back and forth motion. We didn't use steam but did do the sliding. Thanks for all your helps!

| Yep that will do it, glad the mystery is solved. I t may possibly wash out but I have a doubt perhaps its not that noticeable. Do post pic when done I bet its great! |

| I did it at a sleepover party for my DD,they designed pillowcases and used to fill with crafts made and goodie bags and prizes from thier games, At movie time I heat set them.(press do not iron) They thought it was cool and it gave them a keepsake. There are so many ideas you can come up with and its a fast way to finish a big project or a quick gift. |

Ooh the pillowcases sound like a blast. i was thinking of quilting pillow shams to go with the quilt but wanted to solve the mystery first!!

It's been awhile since I did this, but I used crayolas. Cover the picture with a piece of brown paper bag and hold the iron down for one minute, ( NO STEAM) I'd wash in cold water. If it fades after lots of washing recolor it and heat set. You can also stencil or paint on fabric with acrylic paint and heat set it. Makes great aprons, pillowcases, table clothes etc, Looks even prettier to paint and then outline and embelish with embroidery.
