I have been sewing with flannel a lot lately because I have been sewing a lot of diapers for Nora. I love shopping for flannel because of all the great designs they have these days.
So other than making ultra cute diapers, does anyone use flannel a lot in their sewing projects? Do you use it in quilts or for the back of quilts? Do you use it to make aprons or less absorbent materials?

Alee, it would be nice on the back of quilts. I've never made one like that but would love to. I love flannel sheets, especially in the winter. My grandma had a flannel fabric/sheeting that she would always put on my bed when I stayed all night with her because I liked it so much. She called it outening cloth. Not even sure if thats how it's spelled. I believe she's the only person I've heard use this term. I'd love to see some of your diapers, please post some Pictures!

| I back baby quilts with flannel and fleece - both are so snuggly and sell well. I also like to make quilt tops with flannel, not the baby kind, but the plaids, deep woodsy colors etc. Very nice. |

I'll have to get some pictures made :) I will post some later. Some of the diapers are just the flat fold kind and some are made to look like the disposables (elastic legs and such).

I use flannel in my cloth pads! It is so comfy and soft. Works for dipes, works for pads! I have a few flannel skirts too for in the winter months to wear underneath my favorite summer skirts and dresses. You could make DH a few pair of snuggly boxer shorts if he wears them. You can make hot pads for the oven, or fabric trivets for on the table. You can overcast the edges and make some nice wash cloths or cloth napkins....thats all I can think up for now!

I just love flannel...so cozy!! I make pajamas for my kids, cloth menstrual pads and pillowcases with it...and Tasha had some great ideas too. Good quality cotton flannel makes really really nice napkins. I should make some up ...I am ready for some new napkins.

Tasha made me think of something i haven't made in the longest time Alee.. Like a Hot Pad but stitch a couple layers.. & then stitch rows in it.. so you can pour rice down each of these little rows.. & the rice can have some scented oil on it.. When you place your hot skillet or pan on the Hot Pad.. it smells so pretty!
Jenny.. Girl you have to make yourself some napkins!.. thats the 2nd time i've noticed to mention needing Napkins!!
Alee there is the prettiest little quilt that i like to make using flannel.. it looks like Chenille..
I use 4 or 5 layers of fabric.. or flannel.. which ever your using.. I've cut 6x6 inch squares & stitch the layers each 5 together so i will have several blocks now.. but the stiching is the trickiest part.. I start by stitching at a diagonal, from one corner to another.. then i measure the middle to an edge.. & draw with a pencil line parallel with my first stitch.. I'll sew another 4 or so until i reach the corner.. & do this on either side of first line i stitched.. next you have to cut through every layer of fabric EXCEPT the BOTTOM layer.. They will look like such a mess while your doing this.. & DON"T slice your finger off!!. But make as many of these squares as you would any quilt you wanted to make..
Then toss them all in the washer maybe 2 or three times.. Then the dryer.. i know.. air drying.. but for this process.. we need the dryer.. they need to be dried in the drier a couple times to get that Chenille effect.. once your finished with you washing & drying.. you'll stitch all of your 6x6 inch blocks together..
I have some blocks left over from other finished quilts if you'd like to have one for a reference Alee.. But i know most of you have seen this before.. I just love the finished look of this!

That sounds really interesting! I would love to learn how to do that since my mom LOVES Chenille bedspreads. It would be fun to make a lap blanket or something for her.

Hi
I have made two quilts from flannel, one a crazy quilt and one a chinelle quilt and I love to cuddle up in both of them. When my kids were small I made lots of PJs for them from flannel. Just need to remember that it shrinks alot.

Here are some pictures of my flannel diapers. One is just a hemmed square (the flat fold type) The other is one of my first prototypes of the fitted style. Both work great!

The pattern on the fitted diaper is of a bear in a sleeper hat sleeping on the moon (with the little pajamas that have the button behind) and sleepy swaddled stars around the moon. It has been washed quite a few times to the pattern is a little fuzzy :) |

I was going to suggest a rag quilt, but see Anne beat me to it! :)
I'm sure it's probably the same as the link Anne posted, but there are also directions on JoAnn's site. Just do a search for 'ragged homespun quilt'. I would post the link, but haven't had luck in the past with it copying and pasting correctly.

I think I have seen that like this too now that your showing it.. Had forgotten all about it.. That may even be an easier project Alee to start out with... It looks so cozy doesn't it!
I'll send you one of the left over sqaures of the one i finished before.. It's not flannel but you'll get the idea.. So if you feel like doing one for your Mom you can.. & tell Nora that Aunt Kathie has already started one for winter for her!!
I love the diapers Alee!! Make me wish I had babies again so I could snuggle them up in them!!.. When my kids were babies I insisted on using a diaper service & everyone thought i was nuts.. Because everyone i knew of course used disposables.. But every week when mine were delivered.. smelling so sweet & fresh..& i put those nice cloth diapers on my babies.. it just reinforced how i felt about the cloth ones!.. Wish i had come up with the Flannel Idea way back then!!

My flannel chinelle quilt was five layers of flannel laid one atop the other and then stitched diagonally, I did this is four sections each going on a different diagonal, then the top four layers were slashed open. After binding the edges the whole thing is washed and dried to make it fluff open. So pretty and so cuddly.

I like the idea of doing it in squares as the weight of the all those layers at the sewing machine was a pain. Literally.LOL It is sure a pretty finished project. Always a surprise how the colors will blend.

I make pillowcases from flannel and my family loves them. I also use flannel to make the rag quilts already mentioned. I only use two layers though and no batting of course. It is a nice lightweight, but warm quilt that way. I made one for my son when he went away to college and he always used it.
I am planning to make a flannel apron one of these days. Nice for the winter, and with all of those gorgeous colors, it would be lovely. |

they sell an organic flannel that is suppose to be more absorbent then cotton flannel.
I sent away for some sample fabric to see if I will like them. I'll let ya know what I thing after I receive the samples.

I'ved always heard the lightweight flannel sheets called sheet blankets and have used them for years. Kept my daughter warm in bed when she was little. Both my kids still kick the top sheet down in bed and I've decided it was because they were used to the flannel when they were little. That was before flannel sheets became the big thing and probably when flannel that is good quality and napped on both sides became a hard to find item. Some of it you can see through and that's not how flannel is supposed to be. A few companies still use the good stuff for their ready mades, but it is pricey.

Thanks for the great links ladies! This week I am focusing on getting my house back in order and then I am going to have to be getting ready for a trip to Wyoming. Hopefully by the end of June I will be able to try my hand at sewing a bit more :) I have SO much to learn!
