I'm sitting here with the tv on and watching the news. They had a clip about Kiwi birds that I thought was really interesting! I know this is not about farm or domestic animals, but I thought I would share anyway. The female kiwi bird lays one egg that is so large, it takes up 3/4 of her body. In fact, she cannot eat, as the egg takes up so much room...there's no room for food. They're about the size of a chicken and may be smaller, so you can imagine the what the poor thing is going through! The reason the egg is so big is because when the chick hatches, it has been fully nourished and can survive on it's own as soon as it comes out. They are no longer dependant on the parents. So...the difficult part (other than laying a thing that hugh) is over. The chick is fully raised. lol! An early 'Happy Mother's Day' to all! |
