My mom just turned 77 and in the past month or so she has occasionally been passing some blood in her urine. Not much discomfort at all. And her regular aches and pains. I hate to read too much into the symptoms but I have a 'not so great' feeling about this. Of course I read up on it and added in all her other health problems and came up with something I didnt want to think about. We have an appt with a urologist on Friday. Anyone else had any experience with such symptoms?

The only time I had blood in my urine I had a kidney infection. I would think she would be in lots of pain though...I sure was!

Me too. I have had several bouts in my life. WOW - P-A-I-N. And this poor woman has a pretty low tolerance for pain so I think she would be saying if it were bad. When I read online she has so many symptoms of the BIG C. I dont want to think about it but since I am her primary caregiver, I have to consider it. We will know more Friday.

when I was pregnant with my most recent child..I had a touch of blood in the sample..and they told me that what I had was a "silent bladder infection" no pain, no nothing..I had no idea I had it, but then remembered having a slight lower back ache but thought it was because of being preggers.
I really hope it is not the thing you are thinking.
The absolute best of wishes to you and your mom.

I've also had blood in my urine with a urinary tract infection, but I felt "icky" all over...feverish, and pain in my bladder. I think you can have them without pain, though as well, as above mentioned.

I'm crossing fingers that she will just need some good antibiotic. So many benign symptoms mimic the one associated with terrible things....We'll be waiting to hear from you after she's had her tests. You're both in my thoughts!

Thank you all for your good thoughts. I didnt mention earlier - forgot I guess - she has already had two rounds, back to back, of antibiotics. But I know I have to NOT think the worst.

Hi Susan,
Having been through the "Big C" with my mom, I know you are just churning right now. I'm so sorry. I hope it isn't the Big C because the options with it in the bladder...well.....the doctor will know more. Anyway, each day has enough worry of its own, so take each day as it comes.

One more thought. Is your mother on Coumadin or aspirin therapy? When the blood gets too thin, it often shows up in the urine. Also "natural" blood thinners might have an affect: Ginko Biloba, Vitamin E there are others too.

Pins and needles until Friday.
Blessings to you and your mother....

I'm a nurse who works for a urologist. There are many reasons to have blood in the urine. Most of the people we see with blood in their urine turn out to have nothing wrong(benign hematuria), a stone somewhere in the urinary tract, or an infection. Not everybody has pain or discomfort when they have a UTI. Has her Primary Care Provider ordered any other tests before seeing the urologist? Renal ultrasound, abdominal CT scan? Or just waiting until she sees the urologist? Just know that bladder cancer caught early is very treatable. Good luck to you both.

Well I knew to come here for support! Thank you all...and Marcia THANK YOU for the info. We will just see the urologist first. Then go from there. My mom is a very matter of fact kinda person so she has already discussed all her concerns with me. I will keep you all posted.

I'll be thinking about you both Sweetie..

I'm sure this is NOT what your thinking..
it really is fairly common according to my Mother in Laws Dr...
She seems to have this .. gee.. i don't even know what to call it besides a .. 'slow leak' sounds a bit odd.. but she just always shows blood in her urine.. she's 65 or 66 now i think.. & this has been going on for at least the last 6 years..
Routine tests all the time to keep up with what's going on with her of course.. but they always explain it away as something common..
She just continues to loose a bit of blood through her urine..
& they keep an eye on her Iron levels..
Aside from that.. They say she's fine..
So I'm just waiting to hear the sigh of relief from you too.. ok?
let us know what you hear..

Oh you're both very welcome Susan. And Kathie....that 'slow leak' would be what I called benign hematuria. Some people in the filtering process in their kidneys let red blood cells slip through. It's not usually a problem but does need to be evaluated occasionally anyway just to be sure that nothing else is going on.

Not a urologist, but I have another encouraging example to add. My mil has had a lot of trouble with chronic UTIs and occasionally blood in the urine. I think in her case, the blood was caused by a small benign cyst somewhere in the urinary tract. Unpleasant for her, but definitely not life-threatening.

I overheard a conversation here at work just yesterday, with one of my coworkers saying that she and her mother had decided to stop researching their symptoms online or in medical books. "They all end up telling you you have cancer!" was what she said.

I hope you get good news from the doctor. Try not to worry too much in the meantime (easier said than done!). There are so many other harmless things it could be.
