I have a new pattern for a nightgown on Heirloom Sewing by Peggy Dilbone or www.PeggyDdesigns.com that I just love. However, I have never done this type of sewing and the pattern is much different than any I have tried. The pattern is called Sweet Dreams Serger Nightgown but I was hoping to do this on a regular sewing machine since I don't have a serger.
Any suggestions on this type of sewing would be helpful.

Tina, I am just learning about this myself. Do you know the martha pullen company? her magazine, sew beautiful, is all about heirloom sewing. I'd recommend looking at their website for resources and how tos. They also have instructors that are licensed to teach her heirloom techniques. there might be some classes in your area if you call the company to find out.

I did some of this when my girls were little. I also took a few classes back then. Martha Pullen is a big name in this. She has a magazine called SEW BEAUTIFUL and she also has a show on PBS. There is another magazine called CREATIVE NEEDLE. They are both sold at Borders and Barnes and Noble. I never did anything with the serger though except for a rolled edge which they refer to in your pattern. I even got a pleater. This stuff is beautiful. I think the 2 tricks are to go slow and also to use good materials including thread. The thread makes a big difference. In fact I was at the fabric store yesterday buying thread (not for this work for aprons) and I was looking at the good thread. It does cost more but I think it is worth it.
If you go on ebay they sell back issues of the magazines. A few of these could be very helpful as they do have good instructions and articles in them.
You know, you got me thinking, maybe I will start that up again and sew some stuff for me!!

I totally fell in love with this nightgown as it is so pretty! The gowns in the stores are sooooo ugly and cheap. Lizabeth and Merle, I think everyone needs a pretty nightgown or two and maybe you both should invest in this pattern too. I got it for half price with a coupon. I did buy the latest issue of Sew Beautiful but it doesn't really explain the steps that clearly. Usually I can figure things out but even the pattern is kind of vague on how to cut it out, so I guess I'll just keep searching and asking. I'll check out the Creative Needle magazine and I'm planning on a visit to the Stitching Post in Columbus this week since it is only five minutes away from another place that I need to go too. I'm trying to combine my trips because of gas!
