~~ Aprons ~~
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was Even used for cleaning out dirty ears. Aprons I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy Chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.
And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas Had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen From the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will Replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes.
HAPPY NATIONAL APRONS DAY IN MAY. (sorry I do not know who wrote this sweet tribute to the Apron but I just had to share it with you all) tata-4-now

How precious a story and so true. I could see my grandma as I read it. I love aprons but am ashamed to say all I have I can't use because their kinda dry rotted I guess. The material tears easily so I just keep them put up. I did find one at the thrift store a few years ago but I gave it to my daughter. My grandma's apron that I had I gave to my sister one year as a Christmas gift. I heard her telling a story about grandma's apron and I decided to give it to her. I must say it pained me to do so, I loved it so much. But I'm glad that I gave it to her. I don't sew a lot so I've only made an apron once and that was in school in the 6th grade. I sooo love aprons, I must go on an apron search. ~~Blessings, Mikki Jo

Just found out about National Apron Day, which is May 14th, and am looking forward to it. It might be fun to post a picture of our favorite apron for all to see. Whacha think? Maybe even tell how many we have, apron trivia, if there is such a thing. A day of celebrating domesticity, I love it!

Have you seen the aprons that MaryJane's Farm makes? They are fabulous! My hope is that my fiance will get me one for a belated Mother's Day gift :)
I hope you find anothe apron at a thrift store! Maybe if I get my sewing skills up to snuff, I will send you one :)

Grace, what a pretty Verse That was!! I'm so glad you found it for us right now!!!
Can't remember where i 1st saw it that the "Holiday" was coming up.. One of you Girls post's this week or last ..
But i have decided that We need to celebrate by all wearing our Aprons to work on the 14th!! (Which will be pretty funny since i work in an office..) Although casual dress.. they'll still look pretty funny wearing their Aprons in to work that day!! Can you just picture it??) I sent a Memo out letting everyone know of the upcoming event.. lots of them plan on wearing an Apron.. But Most of them don't even OWN one!! How sad was that??? So.. i've offered up some loaner Aprons for the day.. & we are now also planning on a Pot Luck that day Too.. May as well put those Aprons to good use.. right!!

Kathie, I think your idea is great! I have seen gals wear shorter more fitted aprons over blue jeans, and it looks really cute and chic. As I am a SAHM, I will wear mine all day, though I thought that I would even wear differnet ones through out the day just for fun. Who knows I may run one up my flag pole! An American flag and an apron, seems very grass root!

Hey Kathy, luv your idea about wearing our aprons to work....my only problem is I work for the Sheriff's Dept,,,,can ya see a cute calico apron over my uniform??? Now that would be a hoot! Actually since I work in the Crime Prevention Unit, I wear civi's most of the time, So I think I will hang my apron off my cubicle doorway.... Ladies, I challenge you to wear your aprons on May 14th whether you are a stay @ home'er, corporate exect, clergy, truck driver, or what ever, don't be shy... wear those aprons proudly! tata-4-now

Grace You HAVE to!! & I can't wait for this picture! This will just be the best! I am going to try to get a group picture of all of us wearing our Aprons at work.. which should be pretty funny as most of these girls have never worn an apron in their lives..! ( most will have to be loaner Aprons.. thats almost sad, isn't it? ) anyway.. they are gettin excited.. so.. this may turn into an Apron uprising! I am really looking forward to it.. Julia.. i love the idea of the Flag!!! You know so many people have those little flag pole thingys attached to their houses out front now.. we could even tie an Apron on to that!! Such a great idea!! Thought about the mail box.. but my mail carrier is pretty Psycho.. Remember the movie Chevy Chase was in where he & his wife moved to vermont to live in the country? What a crazy mail carrier her had? That was my Mail carrier.. i'm sure of it..
So.. i WILL be wearing my Apron on May 14th.. & SOMEWHERE on the front of my house.. there will be an Apron.. I've also told my daughter she has to as well.. & Sunday when we were shopping we stopped at the store she works at.. i explained the deal to the girls.. THEY are all going to wear theirs too!!.. AND the store sells Aprons.. could be a big Apron selling day!! Which Farm Girl's Tag line says something about a one girl revolution? or something like that? Just look at the Power of the Mighty Apron...!

These are wonderful ideas! How about if everybody created some kind of small artwork ab out aprons and their significance and how much we love them? Maybe the size of artists' trading cards. Someone who has access to a digital camera can collect them and show them all on the 14th (or maybe later) on the site? Doesn't have to be fancy or even "arty". Could just be "I wear aprons and I vote!" or something like that. Whadaya think?
