After a sleepless night (will I be a good chicken MOM???) the post office called at 6:55 to announce their arrival. I promise, they've already grown... and I was afraid they wouldn't eat or drink. They eat, drink, poop and HOP all over each other. I have 25 plus a mystery exotic chick which is by far the biggest of the bunch... and I so wonder what HE is:)
What fun!!!

my ducks are all nearly grown now..hardly any pin feathers left.

Oh, Ann - I just love when little ones arrive like that - didn't it just make your heart beat faster to hear their little cheeping from inside the box? You will LOVE having chickens!!!! Congratulations, chick mama! And don't worry - YES, you'll be great at it!

I didn't realise cigars might be involved They're so much fun! Mind you, I have Backyard Poultry magazines out, all over the house... and the Storey books, too. Today I read that sometimes the chicks don't actually drink, and die between days 4 & 6, so I'm frantically trying to catch the smallest ones (Barred Plymouth are my smallest) and MAKE them drink. I wonder why they try to hide when they see me coming???

Ann - one way that I should have mentioned to prevent this, dang it - I really should have mentioned this sooner - is to dip their beaks in the waterer right when you take them from their shipping box and put them in their little area. That way you make sure that each one of them knows "how" to drink... I'm sure they will be just fine! I've MADE a few of mine drink, too - AND, you might want to check their little behinds to make sure they're not plugged up with dried chick doo - I've just rinsed their little seats under warm water in our sink when they get pasted shut and dried them off, then put them under a light inside until they've dried off - I know, it's a little icky, but they're just little...

Libbie, I actually DID dip their beaks in water... but yesterday, in another source read to "make sure they swallow" so you know they've drunk... and of course, I didn't do THAT! LOL, I check their behinds frequently for pasting due to having read about that here at the forum, last spring. You farmgirls are my best source of information! I keep wondering, if chicks are this much fun, what would a COW be like

I really miss having chicks around!!
& Libbie your really reminding me of all the great fun i had!!!
My husband used to work out of state for two weeks at a time & he'd always come home to new babies in the house..
He REALLY hated sharing his shower with Baby Geese!!!

The chicks are growing... and jumping! They began to escape the corral on Tuesday, so I put a two feet high fence of hardware cloth around it and secured camp chicken for the time being. It's a blast to see new feathers and colors every day, but I have to admit no one wants to come sit in my lap, so I just might have to be more detached than I expected (like not naming them.... and make peace with eating them???!!! Maybe not the last.)
I will be pleased when the coop is ready for them and they could leave the house if too rambunctious. Sweetie promises that will be the case...

We raised 8 Barred Rock hens last Spring (they, too started as day-olds from our local Feed and Seed/Agway). It IS so exciting! The gals do a nice job of laying for us now. We didn't name them (though we referred to them vaguely as "Breakfast," "Lunch," and "Dinner" to try and make the sister-in-law that "pets" will be rare on our farm since we're striving to be self-sufficient (or close)).
We'll be getting a mix of 25 chicks (our first group from McMurray Hatchery) at the end of the month (right after or Jacob lambs show up)... Spring is amazing! What type of chicks did you get? We mixed it up with a few more Barred Rocks, Aracaunas or Ameracaunas (I'd need to check the list) and some Cornish crosses. Exciting (busy) times...

Hi Ladies,
I'm stopping by from the Outpost Dispatch & couldn't help joining in on this discussion. I have been planning my 1st chick purchase more carefully than I planned any of my 3 kids! I've been studying like crazy! I've gone back & forth between local & mail-order, and just this morning, I was checking hatcheries again 'cause I'm feeling pretty particular about which breeds I want. My main concerns are gentleness (with my kids), egg laying, and rarity. Right now, I've got Americanas, Dominiques, Brahmas, and White Giants in my online shopping cart at Cackle Hatchery (it's closest to me). It's very strange to me to order live animals by mail. Not sure when they might get here, so that has me chewing my fingernails again, and the minimum order is 15 - am I ready for that many?? I have one lonely black Australorp hen who came with our farm, and I can't wait till the chicks are big enough to keep her company. Anyway, wish me luck as I gather up the courage to push the "Order" button!

Thanks, Ann. I ended up ordering 6 Light Brahmas, 5 Americanas, and 5 White Jersey Giants. Exciting!
