I know it is officially spring when the hummingbirds come back. This morning I was putting a new cover on the mailbox and one almost flew right into the back of my head. The feeder is right by the mailbox so I guess he was telling me something.
I was glad I had picked up an ant guard this morning at Rural King so I came in and fixed up a feeder for them and put it out. I just love those little buzzers!

Do you know what kinds of hummingbirds frequent your feeders? Can you get pictures? I love hummingbirds so much. They are such amazing creatures!

I have had my feeder up for about two weeks, but no hummingbirds yet - lucky you.
BUT, the Baltimore Oriole just arrived today and tried the hummingbird feeder out.
I'll have to start putting some unraveled pieces of baling twine out for them for their
nest....so cool to see their nest hanging in the tree. |

There must be something in the air. This morning I decided to break out the hummingbird feeders and made their food and placed them outside. It might be a bit early here but I just needed to see those feeders outside to give me the jump start I needed. Hope to see those sweetheart SOON! Last year I had five nests of hummingbird babies. Since we are having way too many people move in around my neck of the woods, the birds, deer, elk, fox, bear and mountain lion have suffered but I can not seem to stop that so I just place my feeders outside and hope that a bear is not too hungar. I cant believe it! I have hummingbirds already. I mean here we had over 2 feet of snow this week, and now I am hearing the buzzing sounds of my hummingbirds. Tomorrow I need to make sure to get the feeder out. I dont want them to buzz on by without visiting me. They are so cool!

I have full-on hummingbird wars here now! I think they must stop over here on their way north to breed because once they show up, there are a gazillion of them. They will be here for about a month and then almost totally disappear, only to return in smaller numbers in the late summer.
They sure are feisty for such tiny little critters...lord help you if you go out at dusk anywhere near their feeders and they are forever buzzing the dogs! I have eight feeders out now and am filling the smaller ones every other day.
The most common ones we have here are the rufous hummers with the flaming orange throats. They are such fun to watch. One little male we've nicknamed Rusty has claimed the feeder closest to my living room window and he stands guard on it all day. He'll allow the occasional female to drink, but no males or the fight is on.
They are such fun to watch.

i saw one fluttering at the back door a few days ago .. sooo .. i immediately filled up the feeders .. they haven't discovered it yet .. but i am so looking forward to their little golden bodies flittering to and fro! xo

We cleaned up the porch yesterday (washed the shutters, swept out corners, etc...) and while I was resting on our new cushy settee, a little hummingbird came buzzing right into my "faux" bright purple crocus and hyacinth's hangin in a large basket on my front door. I felt really sorry for the little thing--and went right to the store to get a feeder!
What is a good, fast homemade recipe?

We have one that is a year round bird - he is brown with a red throat. Our summer humming birds (which by the way are back) are a vivid green with purple around the heads. We usually have up to a dozen or more in our yard during the summer. I just hung out the feeder yesterday but they have been feeding off of the rosemary bush, the lilac and the neighbor's feeders.

I think the hummingbird food we made last was 4 cups of water and 1 cup sugar, boil for 1 minute, and you can add a tiny bit of red food coloring. There have been some hummingbirds coming by lately, need to dig out the feeders in the pole barn and also get bird seed for the bird feeders. I love it outside in the Spring and Summer when the birds are singing all over and the hummingbirds are buzzing around. We have some pictures of the hummingbirds around our feeders from last summer. I'll have to post those on my blog. I'd been wondering what kind of Spring-like pictures I could put on there. We finally had a couple Spring-like days this weekend and worked outside most of each day, looks much better!

Ours seemed to have come earlier this year. Right about two weeks ago! I always make dh laugh cuz we'll be sitting in the backyard and I'll jump up and say, "The hummingbirds are here"! He can't hear them or doesn't recognize the sound at first. I immediately ran inside to make the nectar.

I just love the hummingbirds. we have wars going on here right now as well..they are very territorial..and God help you if you are in their fighting path..they will run right into you....they are always buzzing my dog...who has no glue what is going on :). by the way..someone mentioned orioles...we have a bunch of them in our yard this year. I had read somewhere that they liked oranges...so I halved a couple and stuck them in a couple trees..they don't just like,,,,,,they love...them....they are sooo wonderful to watch..what beautiful birds. I went out and bought an oriole feeder..but they could care less about it...i even put the oranges directly on the feeder..thinking they would get use to it...they ignore the feeder..but devour the oranges..i am putting out 2-3 a day now.....and ..the hummingbirds love the oriole feeder..so...it didn't go to waste :)

Question: If you put out orange halves, don't the ants get in them pretty bad? I would love to do this, I love all kinds of birds, but if the ants get in them will the birds still eat them? I know the hummingbirds won't feed if there are ants in the nectar.

As I was laying on the couch getting from being sick I noticed we have hummingbirds too! Our apple tree was in bloom and I had at least one hummingbird feeding from it! I am so excited! I think I will buy a feeder this year!

Hello Patsy. I have seen some ants on the oranges but the Orioles don't seem to mind...they seem to eat them so fast that the ants don't have a chance. By the way...if you rub oil or butter around the top of your hummingbird feeder..the ants can't get to it..they hit the oil/butter and fall off..it works great.

I'll have to remember the oil at the top of the feeder...
Not to hijack the subject but when I put seeds out for the other birds, I almost always get a snarky squirrel with beady eyes (who is just DARING me to chase him off) just staring at me. I couldn't get to the feeder quickly so I finally got my hubby's long fishing pole (not the good one!) and would snap the squirrels' tushie with it. After a while, all I had to do was step out on my porch and the squirrel would depart for parts unknown!

When we bought this place, there was a feeder left in a tree in our front yard. I filled it up, and the hummingbirds came. I was so excited, LOL!
Since then, we've added another feeder out back, but I see most of them around my petunias.
I love seeing them buzzing around, it's great :-D

These little wonders ARE great, aren't there. I have two varieties of penstemon (some purple of some sort and the bright red firecrackers) blooming right now and our hummers love them - I can hear them cheeping at each other and racing back and forth around that flowerbed. They are such amazing little things. The inspiration for the helicopter, too, I've heard...
