Hi Farmgirls!
(I'm filling in for Sara for this thread from years past. xo )
Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is our 2026 Herb of the Year!
For new FarmGirls; each year we celebrate our FarmGirl Jubilee and MaryJane's birthday in May. Some of us plant the Herb of the Year or a rose in celebration. Sara has usually posted announcement of the Herb of the Year early so those who wish to plant it can add it to their garden shopping list.
Sooooo... please be sure to post recipes and other uses for our beautiful tumeric and post pictures for inspiration for all to share.
Happy Jubliee celebrations!

Significance of Turmeric:
Turmeric, often referred to as the "golden spice of life," has been revered for over 6,000 years in various cultures. It is known for its vibrant golden-orange rhizome, which is not only a staple in cooking but also has extensive medicinal uses. The International Herb Association (IHA) has chosen turmeric as the Herb of the Year for 2026, highlighting its importance in kitchens, apothecaries, and dye pots.

That makes a beautiful flower, I will try to plant and learn how to harvest into the powder.

Turmeric taken with omegas is very beneficial for pain management and inflammation. I take it daily. So many good uses for it in the world of our health.

Turmeric looks beautiful before it is harvested! I have only had turmeric tea. I will have to try it as a seasoning with my food.

I haven't tried it yet, but there are a lot of recipes for "golden milk". Since it's our herb of the year, I'll have to give it a try! Fun fact, I read that black pepper boosts turmeric absorption by up to 2,000%!

Krista, Cindy, Ginger Tumeric teas are one of my favorites! Heather, I've seen golden milk recipes as well, have always been curious, but have never tried. Perhaps this is the time to try it!! Hubs and I have started taking tumeric supplements as well, Denise, hoping it helps with our inflammation.
