I have onions planted in basic potting soil from a big box shop. I added some pellet fertilizer. I know onions are heavy feeders.
Should I also give them a water soluble fertilizer?

Today's good mood brought to you by a lot of coffee!!!

Today I planted 10 gladiolus bulbs that will bloom in mid-summer.

Tara,I love to grow onions! Pull them up and wash them while my skillet of cornbread is in the oven!

Sara, I love Gladiolus ! I had them, all colors thanks to my neighbor! when I was a young wife and mother in the city. I thought they only grew in hothouses untill I saw them growing out of the ground at my neighbors. She got so tickled at me thinking that. She said, They grow in the dirt either place! I was only 20 years old!
Here in the country, I gave up,the moles ate them year after year! I may try again!

Connie I read somewhere that if you plant garlic with your bulbs the moles will leave them alone.

My grandmother's purple irises are starting to bud out and all 10 gladioluses are now up. Zinnas in 3 raised tubs are up but only an inch high. I'll have to thin them out in a couple of days. I hate thinning cause I am always afraid I'll take out the healthy ones and leave the weaker seedlings. I use a pair of old embroidery scissors to thin.

Aww Sara, my Granny had purple iris too.I still have a few bulbs that I dug up and brought with me when I moved to the country 38 years ago.
My Nasturtium seeds are up! Thinning always scares me! Great idea using the small scissors.

Connie, do you remember the old white irises called flags that grew along creek banks and in roadside ditches? Haven't seen them in decades.

My sister, Betty and I went to Kelly's today for plants. Here's my list of plants.

one cherry tomato plant
one orange geranium to match cushions on back deck
six rose portulaca plants for pots on both sides of sidewalk to porch

basil
sweet marjoram
lemon grass
lemon thyme - the only thyme they had
stevia - Tara mentioned it so I wanted to try it
rosemary

I have been waiting and checking to see if things are starting to come up this spring, so far not much. We have been cold, so I guess things are not waking up yet. I do have some seedlings up, that I started in the house. Enjoy your flowers everyone.

We have plenty of flowers and trees blooming but I know we can still have frosts coming or even snow so I'm waiting it out yet.

Finished planting the herbs this morning. Will have to get more potting soil before planting the flowers. The potting soil should be here by Wed so I will have to keep a close eye on the flowers to make sure they are moist and out of the wind.

Am enjoying “catching up” on the events here with you! Our town here in N MI is one affected by the severe ice storm. Electricity still not connected back to many homes (over 10 days) and cleanup crews & linemen everywhere. Today though it is in the 40s and sunny!

When asked “How are you?”, I reply, “Better than good!”

Sharon, I hope power is restored to all soon and no more ice storms for your part of the country.

Thank you Sara! The companies are working so hard! I think all but the most outlying homes should be restored by Monday. Then cell/internet restoration will be targeted.

When asked “How are you?”, I reply, “Better than good!”
