I was searching around for some homemade cleaning recipes and found this one I thought I would try sometime. It seems simple enougha dnI thought I would share it with you too.

Homemade Scouring Powder
1 cup of Baking soda
1 cup of salt
1 cup of borax powder

Mix all ingredients and store in an air-tight container. Use as you would use commercial scouring powder.

Jonni-

It just depends on how strong of a scent you want. I would start out with just 2 or 3 drops. Any citrus smell is going to fade faster than others. You can always add more- but you would have to make a lot of powder to cut the smell if you made it too strong :)

Alright. I just bought some Mandarin and Lavender Essential oils from the healthfood store. If I make this scouring powder, how many drops do I want to use? A little or alot. I get the feeling that a little goes a long way...

Annie,
I don't have a health food store close so I order it from
www.vitacost.com. They are the cheapest I have found online and no matter how much you order shipping is 4.99 UPS

Thanks, Denise. Sound like something I'm going to try. Do you get the Bronner's eucalyptus at a health food store? Where else would I be able to find it?

Peace and love.

I just use a bit of Bronner's eucalyptus and water in a spray bottle to disinfect my countertops. I use baking soda, borax and bronner's tea tree in a paste for scrubbing and b. soda, borax and a few drop of bronner's lavendar soap for laundry. Comes out great and smells good too!

Thanks Alee. I use vinegar for everything else, why not my counter top. I'll see if I can find that polish at the hardware store - live in a very small town so don't have a lot of stores to chose from, other than driving an hour away to find bigger stores. But may end up doing that anyway to find it. Thanks so much again.

For granite counter tops I just use vinegar and water. It does a great job. For protecting it I use something called Gel-Gloss. It isn't organic but it does put down a protective barrier and only has to be renewed every 6 weeks or so. It is made with Caranuba wax and other such things.

I too have been using this solution - found it in a book from The Queen of Clean. I also add some EO (Tea Tre) to just punch it up a notch. Works great and it's safe and non-toxic and best of all cheap.

Anybody out there have an at home brew for cleaning granite counter tops? Have been trying to find something besides the commercial brands out there that will do just as good. Will appreciate any ideas you have to offer.

Thanks a bunch ladies.

Thanks for the bump! I'd forgotten about this recipe! I think it would work GREAT, and I forgot to try it!!! Can you tell I've been up ALL NIGHT LONG (don't I wish I was exaggerating!) with a teething baby?!?!?!

XOXO, Libbie

That recipe was posted somewhere earlier. I have been using it for about 2 weeks now. It seems to work pretty good, I am happy with it. Though I don't have my tub hooked up yet-hummm its been a year. I knew the makeshift shower in the basement was a mistake!!! :) Michele

Shelle,
That looks great combination, but I'll just have to add something herbal to it.
I'm thinking orange or lemon essential oil with a touch of tea tree. I just might want to scrub everything then.
Thanks!!!

I'll have to try this one, Shelle! I've been using plain ol' baking soda, and it works pretty well, but this looks like it may pack a little more punch. Thanks!
