I've been trying to stock up on dry goods l I keep pasta, beans, rice etc. But my cupboards were full and I have a year round mouse problem. So I looked to my open beams for help. I have decorative tins that had nothing in them. I put macaroni in a zip lock bag and used one tin for that. I used another for dried beans and one for rice. I managed to make room in my cupboard for other stuff and best yet mice wouldn't get into it.

I use mason jars as well. On the farm we used crocks. But an aside...I hid the kids Christmas presents in the rafters of the garage and they went nuts trying to find them. They never did. Great spot. Sounds like you need some good mousing cats.

Hay there,
Glad this thread has been revived. I use the 5 gallon buckets with lids for dog foods and mason jars for dry foods. I have a vaccumm pump for baggies but don't know much about the jar vaccumm. Does it work on all jar lids?

I have been using a sealer for my jars and it is nice to be able to "see" what I have in the pantry.

We use the large 20 gallon trash cans to store our dog food. It keeps their food fresh and everything else out. It works really well both inside the house and in the garage.

Reviving this thread - this always a great topic for sharing new ideas. I use mason jars too - I like the half gallon ones for things like beans and rice in my kitchen pantry. For bulk storage in my big pantry, I've taken to using 20 gallon metal trash cans - I buy them brand-new of course. They're large enough to hold two 25 pound bags, plus smaller bags down the sides. I've got one for baking, with flour, white sugar, brown sugar and powdered sugar. And then I've got one that hold rice and a variety of beans. Anyone else try these?

Some good ideas. I use a vaccum seal and buckets along with my mason jars. Although I don't have a mouse problem it is always something to be on the look out for! We also keep a good back stock of food supplies ( along with other supplies) on hand at all times. One just never knows.

Love these ideas -- all good ones. We seem to have our mouse issue licked (fingers crossed!), but those tiny little wee itsy bitsy ants are such a nuisance. Ever since last spring, I have sealed and lidded and folded and taped and corralled every little bit of everything that went into the cupboards and it has really helped. His Dudeness failed to see the importance of such vigilance until I had to toss a box of his very favorite crackers -- Hmmmm! Now he gets it.

I also use jars to keep things free from pests. I use oxygen absorbers to keep everything dry.

Love it! Such a great idea, Lorena! I will definitely remember that! I use my Mason jars, too, and save jars from store bought items. I like to vacuum seal them to keep out air and moisture. Hugs - Nini

Try the school concession stands for gallon pickle jars. They are a great way to store items and they have a large mouth to get your whole hand in when its time to wash them. Hmmmmm, I think I need to put my order in at the school next week!

Like Peg, I use jars of all sizes to store dried goods. I love it when I can find the half gallon size jars at the store.

Great idea! As an added bonus if you fear our society will collapse in a doomsday scenario no one will think to raid your stores of decorative tins. I think I might watch a little too much of that show.
