Hi girls -

Do you have any suggestions for cleaning carpets naturally but extremely effectively? Now that our dog is older, even though she is on medication, she I having an occasional slip-up. I've never used my carpet cleaner so often in my life! I would prefer not to use the bottled cleaner from the store if I don't have to. I'd really appreciate any solutions you have to offer!

Thanks!

I don't have anything to tell you to use but I appreciate hearing everyone suggestions.

Mary,
Thanks so much for the information on the ratio for the carpet cleaner. I have been looking for something to be able to use in mine.

Lisa~ I LOVE Vitacost. I get all our vitamins and things there. I found them quite a while ago and I have saved much by using that company!

O, a trouble's a ton or a trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it!
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only--how did you take it?

Here's something that worked on my large area rug! Use 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar in carpet steam cleaner to clean the carpet. Then, fill a spray bottle w/ hydrogen peroxide. Test an inconspicuous area of your carpet for colorfastness. Spray the carpet w/the peroxide. While still damp, sprinkle the carpet w/ baking soda. Brush it in, using a broom. Let dry. I was able to do all three steps, one after the other, but my steam cleaner is one that doesn't saturate the carpet. When it dried, I just vacuumed. The baking soda was stubborn to get up in a couple of spots, but came out pretty well. I was really pleased w/ the results. I sympathize w/ your dog situation. Our old girl has started to drip, although her medication has helped a lot. Also, I have to make sure that I get up and let her out in the middle of the night, which isn't something I ever had to do in her younger days! Hope this helps!

Awesome! Thanks, Nicole! Is there a particular ratio of vinegar to water that I should use? My guys say they can't smell it, but I sure can. I have been vigilant in keeping up with this and making sure her fur is clean, but the smell is driving me nuts. The regular carpet cleaner didn't seem to remove it at all, at least not to me. Everyone always jokes that I have the world's most sensitive nose, but... I did try a little baking soda, too, but it didn't work very well. Plus I really hate to have it drop down through the carpet fibers and remain there. That just seems like it would be SO unsanitary.

Thanks and hugs right back to ya!

Nini,

Vinegar is a great neutralizer for the smell of urine, too.

Hugs,

I will definitely check out the Dr. Bronner! I hadn't thought of that at all Lisa - thank you! I think I still have a bottle in the cupboard, but I will still check out Vitacost. I love that website, too! Thank you! Thank you! Hugs - Nini

When my Great Dane Willow hit that age, I used either vinegar, or Dr Bronner's peppermint castile. It has a very strong peppermint smell. It is pricy, but I get mine through Vitacost. They have great prices & if you spend $49 everything ships free. They have tons of vitamins, supplements, personal items, and organic foods(I get all of my Bragg's ACV & aminos there etc..) Point is, you can spend $49 in no time & still save money big time in the long run.
I love that company. If there is anything I need food wise, supplement wise, cleaning wise, I always check them 1st.
Anyway, I feel your pain with the potty mistakes. I was cleaning carpet & washing dog beds every day. Good Luck!!!
