We recently were given a neat old piano, but it had been in a garage where the cats apparently lived for at least five years. The garage smelled really bad. We have the piano in our garage waiting for hubby to do a little work on it before beinging it into the house. I have noticed that when I go into my garage it now smells like the one the piano came out of. The smell is not as strong, but I can smell it. I will not bring this into my home. Does anyone know if this can be gotten rid of? I do not want to ruin the wood on the piano, so we need to be careful how we treat it.
Anyone know of a remedy?

I would like to hear if any of the solutions help. My step-mom swears by vinegar of animal smells.

back when I was in my teens I was hired to clean wood paneling in a house that had had now mind you a "bobcat" living in it!! yep a big ole bobcat..oh land sakes did that house stink. scrubbed the walls thoroughly with Murphy's oil soap. I don't really know if this worked for the long haul, but it is what the owner of the house wanted us to use.(she had rented the home to folks that I guess thought it was a "zoo"..LOL anyhow..the murphy's oil brought back some of the shine to the walls too.
And while we were cleaning it certainly helped things to smell lots better.

Pamela, just a thought... Could some of the smell be coming from INSIDE the piano? Don't most of them have some fabric/padding/raw wood in their "works"? Those kinds of things absorb odors even if Mr. Kitty never had direct access to them. If that's the case what about spraying a Febreeze type produt or possibly dropping a couple of scented "tarts" inside? I have had old furniture that smelled musty when I got it, and a tart or two left in drawers took care of it.
Sunshine & fresh air will eliminate alot of bad smells too. Can the piano be move outside to "air out" on nice days? Of course a good scrubbing always proceeds any of these solutions.
I'd hate to think of a perfectly good instrument becoming fire wood because it was stinky...but I understand, I wouldn't want that smell in my house either. Good luck Pamela.

I have an air purifier that really gets rid of odors, no water, no mess, just a machine blowing air on the item. I have used one for the past 4 years and on cat urine especially. We get a lot of strays and a lot of them stay. The last one is an 18 lb. tomcat. He's huge, but so lovable.
Back to the machine. My grandaughter had a lot of Barbies and Barbie clothes in an under the bed box. Their cat used it for a litter box. We ran the air purifier on them for two days, and when the odor was gone, we washed them. We saved her Barbies and the odor did not come back.
A friend had her cat urinate on an antique couch. We washed the cushion cover in the Laundry Pure (mentioned in last MJF magazine in Home Safe Home) and that took the odor out of the cover. The cushion was a feather cushion and I worried about getting through to all the little feathers the urine had penetrated. But, we positioned it against a wall so that we could blow directly where the urine was and it took about 8 hours to get the odor out. That was last week and the odor is still gone. I could go on and on about these stories. These are just the latest ones.
As a longing to be farmgirl, here's an offer to the farmgirls of this chatroom. I have a demo unit that I use. I would let this be passed around to whomever needs to get rid of odors. It's simple to use, instructions could be by phone or email. Whoever used it and passed it on to the next farmgirl would pay UPS shipping. The only thing I ask is that you would not keep it longer than necessary and that you would email me what you used it on and if it was successful. I share these stories in my sales efforts. The piano sounds like the hardest one I've heard, but I think it would work.
Frannie, since you are close to Cincinnati, maybe you would be willing to try it. I could get it to you pretty easily. If it works for you, we could start passing it on to others. I would hate to see Pamela not be able to use her piano because of cat odors.
I am willing to do this because you farmgirls sound so friendly and real. Let me know.

Thanks Tina...we'll give it a try. I hope it does no damage to the wood on the piano...but let's face it the piano is doomed to stay in the garage uless the order is gone anyway...so if it is in the garage and in the cold this will do it no favors either. Who knows it may have to be reduced to firewood...

Hi Ladies:
You might try spraying the area with a solution of 30% white vinegar/50% water/20% lemon juice. This works on dog urine to kill the ordor so it might work on cats. You might need to repeat several times or really soak the area. Test on a small spot first.

oh chilluns .. i'm not so sure the 'aroma' will ever totally go away if it is deep within the grain of the wood. i've attempted to 'cover up' cat pee smells (that is exactly why NO CATS IN THE HOUSE ever, ever again!) i'm waiting for a miracle cure .. for a spot on the floor (under the rug ... rug had to be removed) that the cat's preferred as a litter box at my daughter's house! HALP SOMEBODY!

Pamela, I am eagerly waiting with bated breath (or is that holding my breath???) to hear some farm girl remedies to rescue you, because I am in a similar situation here. My husband's three cats have all been "fixed" when they were young, but the male continues to attempt to mark his territory now and then I guess, and has peed on some antique furniture in the living room, also around the fireplace. I am having a heck of a time trying to get rid of the odor; bought a spray that is supposed to discourage the peeing but that isn't helping to get rid of the old smell, which seems worse when it rains and the house feels damp. I have my fingers crossed for both of us! Nance |
