So I'm moving this week - and thought I'd ask if you have any good tips for packing and/or cleaning for a move . . . so, any tips?

I didn't bother to unpack bureau drawers. I just took them out of the bureau and moved them contents and all that way. If you have a moving van, once the bureaus are in, but the drawers back in and remove them again when the bureaus are removed from the van. Use towels and other linens to protect breakables. LABEL ALL BOXES! Particularly where they are going to be put when you get to your new home.

I am beginning to unpack now, and the boxes I packed are good, but the ones my parents helped with are a mess. I wanted to set up the Wii today and discovered that I have no idea where the sensor that goes on top of the TV is! It's a pretty useless machine without it.

Great thread and tips. Perfect timing too, I'm moving in less than two weeks. I have the house more then half packed, but will definitely follow the advice here to do the rest.

Be merciless with "stuff" is my advice, repurpose/get rid of what you can. If that's one positive of moving it makes you go through everything.

My husband likes to save space by packing in drawers and in doors - meaning, if you've got a bureau or credenza or hutch, pack your breakables well and use the furniture as boxes.. For example, glass items do not usually have a lot of weight to them, and they will be safe and secure in heavier furniture items vs. cardboard boxes (you can secure doors with bungee cords)... And you can pack them very well in thick items of clothing and blankets and towels, which saves you a bundle on packing material. We've moved quite a few times since we've been married and his system saves us money, space and simply works like a charm! Good luck in your move, Amy! Blessings to you in your new home! Hugs - Nini

I'm moving in a month as well. Previously I've always like to close off the house room by room as I'm done with it. That way I knew it was clean and empty. Granted this worked much better with a smaller family. If I was renting I always just made sure everything was "top" cleaned since I know most rentals get a major carpet shampoo and usually paint too. For packing- a master checklist of things I need to get done. I label but don't number my boxes (yet). I've never used a mover though either so that might be different if I did that. Those are the major points. Setting up you bed first is a great way to make sure you get some sleep after a long day of unpacking. That first day box is a life saver as well.

A master list is my must do. I pack a box, label it-number it and then write that number down on my notepad and write what's in it that way if I need to get something quickly I can find it. Also I label a NEED NOW box(es) with towels, shampoos, a few dishes etc.

One tip that I have is using duck tape to help label boxes. They come in so many colors and prints. One for the kitchen another for the bathroom .... Happy packing!

Hi...the best to you on Creating Your Life. It is the way to go. Having moved several times as my husband was in the military, the one thing that was useful was to put together a small box that is loaded in the very last, so it can be removed the very first and put on the kitchen counter. In it are essentials that can keep you going the first few days of unpacking..like one pan, plate, cup, silverware, toilet paper, tea, a bath towel, one outfit, dog food, a dish for the dogs water... you get the idea. It is basically to get through the first day or so of unpacking. Go to the store if you can and get just a few essentials for the refrigerator. It saves on time having to stop to go get food when you are looking completely disheaveled from unpacking. The next best tip I have for you is have your bed assembled the first thing and immediately make it up with your sheets and bedding. It is amazing how hard one works to begin to get settled and unpacked. The midnight hour will come quick and it is so great to know you can rinse off in the shower, and fall into bed while boxes are stacked all around. In the movie, "Under the Tuscan Sun" she prepares for a life she didn't have yet, and it unfolded as she began to fully live an enriched life she created. There will be times when doubt sneaks in or waiting seems like it has crowded out moving forward. But keep the faith and just live responsibly. Have fun...as a good friend reminded me years ago..taken from the movie "Sleeping With the Enemy" remember.."You Have Yourself".
