I'm the one that just bought the older house and asked about the porcelain sink. Wellll. Now that it is nice out. I have open all the windows and let everything air out. Now I have found out why the lady that lived there before me like 3 plug ins in each room. My room which was the little boys room and the hall way smells like pee Here I thought I was going to finally get a house that was not have any smells. I don't have the money to replace carpet right now and it's nice carpeting. I'm going to do the carpet cleaning stuff I thought about maybe putting baking soda in with my cleaner or shout on my carpets before I clean them.

Any ideas.... I just love this site. I'm glad my girlfriend had found the magazine. I feel like I can share anything and I'm safe cause as you know I'm a talker. I LOVE TO TALK. people say too much some times.
Well if anyone knows of anything let me know..
I DO NOT like the smell of odoban so that won't work....
That would be a last resort.!
Thanks

You might not be able to replace all the carpeting but carpet padding isn't that expensive. Even if you get the carpet cleaned, the odor will be in the padding and migrate back up into the room. You need to clean UNDER the carpeting too. If the underlayment is really bad too, you could lay a barrier of plastic sheeting, pulled taut and stapled down every few feet, put the fresh padding on top of that and then re-lay the cleaned carpet (clean it before you lay it back down). I have used the enzyme products too and they do help but then you get a good humid summer day and somehow the odors recreate themselves and you're back to square one. 5 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats - been there & done that! lol! Good luck!

I agree Laura, if there is a real floor under all that, I believe you said it was an older house, I would rip it out. All that I can think of is the "stuff" sitting in the padding etc. When we moved in our house my husband did not want me to rip out the carpet on the stairs. One day I just did it and there were bugs in that stinky carpet. At least you can wash throw rugs.

The only thing that I have found to get rid of urine smell is ZeroOdor spray. It is non-toxic and biodegradable and works better than anything I else I have tried...and having had a cat with kidney stones and a tendency to urinate around the house, I have tried a lot! Here is their website:

Hope that helps!

We had a similar problem in our house. We tried everything and then ripped the carpeting out. I'd rather live with subflooring than a urine odor.

Amy, I have an air purifier that removes odors and they don't come back. I had a situation where our freezer was off, unknown to us, and everything in it spoiled. You probably can imagine the odor when we walked into the room. The worse part is that it was off so long it leaked and the horrible odor was in the carpet. My son and I got the air purifiers going. The odor was out of the air in about 2 hours. I put a machine to blow directly on the carpet where the odor was and it took about 6 hours, but the odor was gone and has not returned. That was about 2 years ago. I did not clean the carpet until the odor was gone.
I found out about these air purifiers because I have an old house that gets water in the basement and I needed something to get rid of the musty odor. I had someone loan me theirs and I ended up buying one and then I ended up selling them.

If other things don't work and you want to try this, I will ship you one, phone you with instructions. Then you just ship it back to me. No strings attached and no sales pitch. What happens in a situation like yours is that the urine is probably soaked through to the padding and floor and it takes something to penetrate through the carpet.

Let me know, I love to see these things work. I am willing to pay shipping to you if you will pay shipping back to me. The machine is very easy to use.

Amy- There are a few products that will help remove the urine smell- Urine Gone, Nature's Miracle, UnDuz and Kids'n'Pets(which was written about in the new Apron issue of MJF!). These are enzyme-based products that "eat" the stain. Baking soda will take care of the odor temporarily, but as soon as it gets humid, back it will come. Bleah!
Good luck!!

Try sprinkling baking soda all over and leaving it 24 hours and then vacuming...sometimes that helps alot. I have been in your position before..especially in rentals..ugh!! Sometimes spraying white vinegar helps too..of course you have a vinegar smell for awhile. It does help neuteralize the smell though. There was some talk on a thread here about animal urine and getting that smell out of carpet and someone suggested a spray that helped alot.I wish I knew where to find it..,maybe someone else with a longer memory than I have can remember what the spray was. Good luck!
