I've been converted to cloth diapers and cloth wipes and I've gotten my husband used to not having paper towels. Yay me! So now I want to make some laundry detergent.

But what kind? I'm washing cloth diapers and wipes, plus my husband has sensitive skin. Currently we are using "All, Free & Clear." I would prefer to just make one batch of soap. Is there a recipe that I could use for everything? Which should I use?

Thanks for any help ladies!

I use Zote because it is so readily available and is very cheap. Plus I worry about Fel's because it comes from making petro chemicals.

I just started using the dry recipe recently from somewhere else on this forum and I love it. I will never go back to store bought.

My recipe is the same Alee's except I use 5 bars of soap. We have hard water here in Texas and even with a water softener in our house, it just works better. Also, I use 1 tablespoon for a regular load in my HE washer and 2 tablespoons for really dirty. My son in law has super sensitive skin and since my daughter switched to this homemade formula and vinegar for the softener cycle, his skin has been a lot better.

Has any one tried soap nuts? And where is the cheapest place to buy them? I know Lehman's sells them. And even though I love Lehman's they are often more expensive for things, then other sites are for the exact same brand and same thing.

I copied this from a post I put up a couple days ago:

I have used the liquid laundry soap for about three years now. However, my recipe calls for 1 bar Fels Naptha, 1 cup washing soda, 1/2 cup Borax. Grate Fels Naptha & cover with hot water, cook on med/low heat until completely melted. Mix in soda and borax until completely dissolved. Put in a clean 5 gallon bucket and fill with very hot tap water. Stir and close lid tightly. Let sit overnight, then stir again. I always fill up an old laundry detergent bottle & keep it above the washer so I don't have to dip into the bucket everyday. Dirt cheap and works great! I think the thing I like best is that I'm no longer making 911 trips to the store for detergent.

I've found that if I grate the soap first, then mix it with the all the powders, then put it in the magic bullet, it works so much better! It dissolves very easily that way too, and gets dispersed more evenly I think.

Mine is similar to the recipe above, but on a smaller level. If you want a smaller batch, let me know, & I'll post it.

Hi Micah,

My last entry for the Suburban Farmgirl blog talks about just that, among some other homemade recipes like spray starch. After making my own a few weeks ago and will never ever go back. The results are amazing.

Lehman's (www.lehmans.com) offers a great starter kit with all the necessary tools and supplies, plus it comes with a good recipe. I've been using it for about a year, and it doesn't irritate my husband's EXTREMELY sensitive skin.

Hi Micah!

There is a super easy recipe that you can use- one box borax, one box washing soda, 3 bars of either Fels or Zote Soap and 2 lbs of baking soda. Grate the soap super fine or pulse in a food processor. Mix well- use between 2 tbsps and a half cup depeding on washer basin size and soil level. A downy ball full of straight white vinegar thrown in can soften the clothes more than downy and the vinegar smell fades as you dry!
