We just pulled our carpet up in the family room(the room you walk into when coming in the front door)so it gets ALOT of trafic and use. The floor was sanded before the carpet was put in but there is no finish on it right now. I need something that will "feed" the wood and clean it for a couple months without damaging the wood or making the floor slippery. We are hoping to move in the next couple months and then will have someone add a clear,protective finish to them.Does anyone know something we can use? |

Anyone have any good ideas for getting cat pee out of the wood? I really would rather not paint the floor but if that is what it takes to get rid of that awful smell then that is what I'll do. We are ripping the carpet out tomorrow and then we'll need to take care of the wood floor underneath.

I have tried different things out there and have always come back to good old Murphy's Oil Soap. |

I've always used Murphy's Oil Soap with a little lavender or lemon essential oil. This worked well even on my waxed floors between waxes so long as you were careful about the amount of water. If you don't plan on using a poly coating or paint you could wax with something like Johnson's Paste wax. Just be warned it will make your floors slippery and it is well worth investing in a power buffer if you have much space (like over 100 sq feet). It is painful to hand buff more than that. :)

We use Murphy's oil soap on our unfinished wood floors... We can't replace the carpeting until our beloved dog leaves us (not in a hurry at all!), so we just keep them clean with the "recipe" on the Murphy's bottle - smells fresh and works like a charm! Good luck! - Nini

I'm about 6 months behind, but we just uncovered our livingroom floor and have a lovely oak hardwood floor which I want to leave au-natural if I can spiff it up a bit. It's half(raw)*giggle* and half painted with a clear(something)...it's too old(don't know how old but house is early 1920's)to see what they used.It's a mottled half&half,from years of wear, not an exact half&half.Just wanted to make that part clear. I used Old English red oil on it when we first uncovered it and I mopped it, and it was pretty but that is wore off now. So I just wonder if the olive oil/vinegar would work now? Also, Amy, is that oil&vinegar only in that spray bottle, or did you mean to add water to that mix to make a quart? Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!

I use 3 Tablespoon olive oil, 1/2 cup vinegar to a quart spray bottle with a little essential oil for fragrance. Spray on the floor and mop up with a microfiber cloth. I had the same problem. When we bought our house the floor was covered with carpet. Almost all the finish was worn away. This was the only thing that would give it that nice look. It takes a couple of times before you will see the full benefit but worth a try. If you are using a regular mop you can double the recipe and pour it in a bucket. My floor is about 600 sq. ft. We never did get the floor refinished because this worked so well for us.

We used Orange Glow floor cleaner on them today and now that they are dry they look pretty good! But,I like the idea of the mineral spirits too. |

I have recently looked into the same thing and found this answer.
Mineral Spirits
Mineral spirits are something else that you can try on unfinished hardwood floors. Mineral spirits are a good all-around cleaner for flooring. It does not have any harsh chemicals in it that will permanently damage the unfinished hardwood floor. You can simply put some on a rag and use it to wipe down the floor. Sometimes, this will work where other cleaning methods do not. When you are done, you want to make sure not to leave any excess mineral spirits on the wood.
