I am the manager of a local food pantry. After several people mentioned that laundry soap was a budget buster for them, I finally realized that I needed to share the knowledge of making our own.

I printed out a recipe for liquid laundry detergent, and inserted images for all the ingredients. (thank you, Google images)

After purchasing the ingredients (several sets) I set up a table in the food pantry, and passed them out with the recipe. It was a huge hit.

We're going to keep these ingredients stocked, and keep the recipe on hand at the pantry. I can't believe I haven't done this sooner!!!!

Thanx. Maybe when I get daring enough to try homemade laundry soap, I will.

Ditto Susan. I just fill the dispenser with white vinegar. Between the vinegar and keeping the door open between loads, and I don't have the musty smell, either.

I have an HE machine and I make dry detergent. I use one tablespoon for a regular load and two tablespoons if they are particularly icky. I fill the fabric softener dispenser with white vinegar. I've been doing this about 3 years now with no trouble. I also have never had that smelly problem that many people have with their front loaders.

Thanks Sue! I forgot about www.tipnut.com . Heading there right now to add that recipe to my file.

Ok, I make my own liquid laundry soap and I got the recipe off of tipnut.com, but I've never used vinegar for softener. Do you use white vinegar, or does it matter?

How much vinegar are you using?

I have a HE machine - and I only use 1/4 cup of detergent. I put the vinegar right in the softener dispenser. Works great.

Hi Bev, I usually make dry laundry soap. Is it possible to get your recipe for the liquid kind? Thanks!

ok...I haven't read the homemade laundry soap recipe, but how does it work with and HE (high efficiency) washer that uses less laundry soap than regular machines? How does vinegar as fabric softener work in one of these machines? Has anyone tried yet??

Brilliant! I especially like that you are going to stock the ingredients. Where we are I have to hunt for the ingredients. Since time is in short supply I wind up buying a box of soap and it turns into a vicious cycle. I haven't made my own in years since I keep forgetting to buy the ingredients when I'm at the right store!

Hey I just realized we are nearing New Year's Resolutions, think I have my first one already picked out!

Good boy Hobbs! I love and miss you.
