Howdy,
Trying my hand at the home made laundry detergent (that was fun) and have a few questions to those of you more in the know...is it ok for septic systems and...do you have to grate the soap bar really fine or is regular grating ok (used an old cuisinart grater blade)....smells devine and can't wait to see how it cleans. Thanks, Lilwren on the Ranch

I have made a few batches of soap, and found that if I hand grated it, then put it in my magic bullet & whizzed it for a bit, it worked so much better. Smaller pieces. And my washer is retarded so that if you have the lid open, it's not going to fill up or do anything. I'll be so happy when I finally get my own place & can do laundry however I want! I honestly don't miss the scent either, really.

I've heard of products you can use that you sprinkle into the wash that "Scent" the clothes, and I REALLY understand how nice it is to have good-smelling clothes. I still use softener every once in awhile for some scent, but I don't really mind NOT having any. :) When there IS scent, it's oils that are deposited on your clothes. So more smell = more oils.

I can't imagine it being any worse than a chemical-filled detergent. I have had no problems with it and I have used homemade for a few years now :0)

The scent is citronella in the Zote, btw. I don't think that many natural scents would last through the wash. I have heard of people using essential oils in some type of dryer concoction, but I haven't done this personally. You can always spritz clothes with some lavender water (I use it for ironing). I get a spray bottle and put about 5-7 drops of lavender oil in it. Smells so good. I have not had any spotting on my clothing, either. Just a thought.

I made my first batch with Zote, washing soda, baking soda and borax. Smells delicious and is excellent. I like the idea of giving it with a scoop because it is surprising how little it takes to do a batch. I wish the Zote scent would last but it doesn't, does the Castille? I do love scents. Thanks for the feedback!!

Ninon,

I have septic and have never had a problem with my homemade recipe. I would suggest giving them a scoop to use for their detergent though, as many people don't know how much to use! I use 1/4 cup per load. Also, I use solid Dr. Bronners Castile soap instead of Fels Naptha. There are some beautiful scents available in Dr.Bronners soaps. Our local natural food store carries the solid stuff.

Penny, thank you for getting back to me, I want to give some close DIY girlfriends for Christmas and don't want to wreck their systems! Plan to play around with recipes until I find the purrfect one--

Hi, I love my home made detergent and after a lot of research I found that it was safe for septic, and I read that it was better than store bought. It should work fine with the grater blade, I use my food processor. Try it out a couple of time to see if it dissolves ok, oh and be sure to put water in machine first...( I don't do that...lol) but that is what I was told...good luck...love mine..
