Saw this in the news:

So a study has determined that scented laundry detergent emits toxic chemicals. Really! Like we all didn't already know that.
Do you all know the "thrift store smell"? Walk into any Goodwill, or other thrift store, and they all smell the same. Other than dust, it's the smell of chemicals in all the clothing that has been donated. Laundry detergent, softener, you name it.
Here's to making our own!!!

I use my food process also but be sure you clean it REALLY well. Fels naptha soap does not taste good! |

I grate our soap in the food processor and that works really well. Of course, last time I did it, I grated a whole box full! My mom makes soap, so we use the ones that don't turn out pretty, or older recipes that aren't as great as the new ones! I started out doing it with the cheese grater, but with that amount, I'd be grating all day long!

This is on my list to do along with a million other things! I have all my powders & sodas..and I ton of handmade soap(cause I make that already) plus a million different types of essential oils.... I save the scraps of soap from the shower....let them dry out for a few weeks by throwing them in a basket and just tossing them over every other day or so. Pretty soon my cheese grater will not be just for cheese anymore!...LOL Actually I just bought a micro-planner that may work even better because it will grate the soap into finer particles!

I use Charlie's Soap and I love it. I know that there are other natural laundry soaps - Soap Nuts - and others. I don't use any fabric softener - the clothes smell clean and are soft... there is static in the winter, but it is what it is. There are certain things we live with in this world!

Yeah, any essential oil works. We've just got a few sweaty boys and something's gotta cut that! It's hard to get their clothes smelling fresh, at least! And I personally don't care for lavendar...I think it's one of those love/hate things, and I'm one of the few who can't stand it! I hide whenever my mom makes something with the lavendar! That's her #1 selling soap, though....I guess I'm weird!

My recipe is basically the same - but I use lavender essential oil. Smells like laundry to me! :) |

We make our own...2 cups of grated soap, 1/2 cup washing soda, 1/2 cup of baking soda, as well as a little orange essential oil. We melt the soap in water, let it cool, add the sodas, and fill up a 2 gallon bucket with that and water. And add a splash of orange oil.

Hmmm...after reading these posts I am switching to vinegar for softener and rinse. What do you all use for a natural laundry detergent? I buy no fragrance, but can't find anything all natural for a detergent near me. Any help would be so appreciated. We live pretty green, but I keep trying to improve.

My granddaughter came home from daycare the other day reeking of laundry product. She had spilled paint on her shirt and they put her in a daycare shirt. The smell was so strong I had to roll the car window down. You are right Kayla, it still smelled even after I washed it. That can't be good for you!

I am the same way! I gag down that aisle. & if I buy anything in the dollar store, it all has that smell too, even the bags, probably from the smaller store size & all of the icky products in there. |

My mom and I were just talking about the lingering smell of detergent and fabric softener. We babysit some, and there were a couple kids who needed us to wash their clothes while we had them, and the clothes (and our's, if we washed clothes together) still smelled so loud after washing. I can't hardly breathe in the laudry aisle at the store, and I can't imagine being so used to it that you don't notice it!

I can't stand fabric softeners and all that.
Plus, you can smell someone that washes with Tide from a mile away.
When I was a truck driver I used to have to go pick up at Lever Brothers [They make Lever200 and all those other soaps]. AAgh!
I couldn't breath in that place. As soon as I exchanged paperwork I was out of that warehouse [luckily they had to load, not me].
STINK for miles!
I make my own laundry soap and maybe put a shot of vinegar for rinse sometimes.

Back in the 60s, there were certain clothing stores I couldn't go into because of the overwhelming presence of something like formaldehyde in the air, from all the polyester. The clothes were cheap, and made of the worst fabrics! I saved my money and spent more on good stuff (natural fibers) at better stores, and didn't have to wear a mask when I went to them! :) Still doin' that, even though I have to wait for sales, and I stretch a garment for years until it almost literally falls apart. But the good stuff doesn't fall apart easily, if you take care of it.
I'm really horrified that people still use such harsh chemicals on things that touch them, or that infuse their home environment with toxins. I can't bear to go into a house that has that air freshener junk going on in it. First, it makes me sneeze and my eyes water. Second, it makes me wonder what they're trying to cover up! :O |

I just read this at work and thought "Farmgirls rule! We are on the cutting edge! And have been for years!" I am so glad my clothes don't smell like that. They smell like fabric and sunshine!
