Just wanted to tell you that I have had great success bleaching out clothespins which have gotten mildewy and funky. I put them all in a small tub filled with water, and put in a bit of bleach (I still keep it around for some things). I usually go with the 32 parts water to one part bleach rule. Anyway, I let them soak until the mildew was gone, then rinsed in clean water. Then I set them out in the sun to dry, flipping them a few times, although I suppose I could have stuck the things on the clothesline, now that I think about it!
They look brand new now! I accidentally left them out in the rain a few times, and I did not want mildew stains on my clothes (ick). Better than tossing em! Most of mine are vintage because the spring is much sturdier, and they aren't the easiest things to find sometimes.

Debi, it can be VERY hard to find. Some people just have to order it online. We are fortunate enough to have it in one of our locally owned grocery stores. Our WalMart does not carry it, BTW. I would recommend calling smaller, locally owned grocery/variety stores to see if they carry Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda. Make SURE it's not baking soda...lots of people have never heard of washing soda.

Where do you find washing soda? I want to make some laundry detergent and have not been able to locate it locally.

washing soda is what i used with water i let them soak over night. they came out like new.
you can substute washing soda for bleach for almost anything

cj6, I've done research on how to get rid of mold in the house and what I found was that vinegar is the best to use because it doesn't have a toxic-to-your-lungs "chemical reaction" like bleach does with mold. I have had the best success with the vinegar. Add some tea tree oil to it to kill the mold 'fungus' spores and to freshen the air.

I'm not sure...but you could maybe also try lemon juice and water and setting them in the sun. I don't use bleach for many things, but when I have something that is really mildewy, I do use it then.
