In my life thus far, I have lived on main street in a small town and on a chunk of property within city limits. We have always had weekly garbage pick up.

We are looking at garbage service for the new place we are moving to in June(which is on dirt roads back in the middle of the woods, way out in the county) and we are finding that most garbage haulers pick up twice a week or once a month. My mom was surprised at this. I said "Maybe that's the way they do it out there," and left it at that. Wasn't a big deal to me, but mom is comfortable with her weekly pick up.

I'm wondering what garbage service is like where you are, especially you gals who are "farther out" from town. I told my mom it wasn't an issue because we really don't make that much garbage.

Any other farmgirls here who don't have weekly garbage service? I'm trying to convince mom its ok. :)

When we first moved to the country from the big city, I assumed we'd have to hire a trash service. I quickly found out that most people out this way take their own trash and recyclables to the landfill. In fact, it's a very sociable chore! There's a "trash or treasure" shed where you can find all kinds of great stuff to repurpose, or to leave for other folks. On Saturday mornings, you see people you know and the County employees will give you a hand if you have trouble with anything heavy. For years, I made do with using my Honda Civic hatchback for this chore, but as soon as I could, I traded it in on a used pickup, I wouldn't live in the country without one! There are so many things you can trade for, or even get for free, if you have a pickup truck, and of course, it's essential for hauling topsoil, straw bales, etc.

I am sure our prices will go up now that the gas prices have jumped. It is a good time for us to drop the garbage service. I have found a school that is collecting plastic caps now. I have a place to send my milk caps until I start having our own goat's milk. I will make homemade noodles to avoid buying them in plastic bags. I bought a bulk bag of Amish made noodles to last until then (1 plastic bag). We are raising our own meat chickens now, and that will eliminate packaging in our trash (and provide healthier meals)also.

When we moved to the place I'm leasing now, the owners had a small dumpster that was emptied every other week-- 90 bucks a month!!! It's worth it to us to fill our own cans, and taken a truckload of household trash and recycle-ables to a "waste transfer station" about 2 miles away. We do this about every other week and we pay 2 to 5 bucks a trip. As much as 9 when we had a heaped over huge pickup including an old couch.

We don't have a garbage service. When we take our garbage, we take it to the dump, and it's $40 bucks for a dump truck load.

We pay $20.00/week. Then take all recycling to the recycling center when needed. We are considering doing away with the pick-up, but we are still hassled by plastic bags from dry beans, noodles etc. I'm writing letters to manufacturers daily to ask them to consider compostable packaging, but will continue to make my own noodles when I can.

We are required to pay for rural garbage pick-up - and the risk of a lien on our property if we don't. It's $38...something a quarter. We get once a week pick-up - and just the standard garbage. My garbage man is great - as in if the can is full, he will dump a sack sitting beside the can. Not all of them will. And, because we are rural, we get a free trip to the city dump - 18 miles out of the way (city people have to pay like 5.00 to get in.) So, if my microwave breaks, it sits in my yard until we get a load for the dump. The weekly pick-up won't take paint cans, appliances, tires, anything that is considered "hazardous", so they end up in all the ditches and creeks in our area. Don't even mention recycling - there isn't anyone in the area. Wal-Mart will take plastic bags and they make you trade in your old tires or car batteries, but that's about all the recycling we get done here. I'm not sure if we are in the "no burning trash zone" but if we have boxes, dogfood sacks, etc., my husband will often pile it all around a stump (or stumps) we're trying to burn out. That keeps the can from being so full. Guess you can't please everyone!

Growin up we had once a month pick up. We burned all we could in a barrel in the back yard, composted what we could, and threw all other food scraps to the dogs. It resulted in very little trash, mostly tin cans and aluminum foil and such.

Until last year we had to share a dumpster and the monthly cost with all the people on our road. Then we finally got a company that will pick up out here and we now all have weekly service. It's nicer since we don't have to take a turn on the dumpster sittin in our yard anymore!

I grew up in Kansas, in the inner city, we had weekly pickups, you paid for which ever service you asked for. Seems to me there may of been services where you could get on different plans and probably pay more for more pick ups, however, I think once a week was the norm.

Then I moved to NYC, I lived in Queens, and we lived in the second largest co-op in the world, we had daily pick ups and like was said it was paid for by our city taxes. (YEAH no more city tax!)

Now I live in rural Kansas, and I guess dad found a weekly service again. I think I would choose once a month too. I would come up with some creative ways of having less trash. However, for my dad it may be more wise choice to go with twice a week giving the only two choices. Too many children here, (19 children all together, and 4 adults! So yeah we make too much trash a month!). but, if it was just my husband, me and our children then I would go with once a week as well.

We could have paid pick up every two weeks but have chosen to use that money elsewhere. We have trash stations in our county that are free and have recycle bins too. Most of them are just off the main roads. We take our trash/recycle out when we are going to be driving past the station. It is free for people that live in the county

Hi Amy! We have a summer home in the Adirondacks in upstate NY and there is no pickup, we have to bring it to the dump. Recycling is free, but we pay 10 cents a lb for other stuff. Here in Astoria, which is part of NYC, we have free pickups twice a week, and recycling once a week. I say "free", but of course we pay for it in our taxes.
