I am discouraged. I have been using either the homemade dry laundry soap from an issue of MJF or Mrs. Meyers. I've tried using vinegar in the rinse for fabric softener or an organic ( like Mrs. Meyer's.

My problem is that my clothes (with vinegar) smell off and no matter which softener I use stuff clings to my clothes! I know some of it is dog hair (two Goldens and a Jack Russell) but some is long light colored strands and I don't have that much grey hair and the strands aren't as long as my hair. Even if I take the clothes out of the dryer and put them on my bed to fold-not touching anything that has dog hair on it-this stuff is on my clothes in some abundance. It comes out of the dryer that way. I'm not sure what it is or where it comes from but I really don't want that on the inside of my shirts. It tickles and drives me nuts!

Any suggestions?

I finally figured out what I'm doing wrong. I was adding it, on accident, at the end of the rinse cycle because I forgot that I switched settings to only have one rinse cycle (save money and water) and I was using too much. For a full load I use 1/4-1/2 cup and I add it right to the laundry as the washer is filling up for the rinse cycle. My clothes are so soft even after hang drying in the house! Plus it seems to boost the laundry detergent. I mentioned it before but I used the recipe I got of the forum for dry detergent. THEN I thought to be sure I did a load without laundry and used hot water and a bunch of vinegar to make sure everything was clean and good to go. Either way my laundry is coming out cleaner and vinegar smelling free!

Oooh, Jennifer. Good for you. I'm going to look for some the next time I go shopping. Sounds like it may do the trick.

Thanks for the advice, Erica. I picked up the Tide cleaner and ran it through my washer - smells great now.

On mine the bleach dispenser is in the corner under the lid. The rinse dispenser is right in the middle of the top of the agitator.

Dumb question-is the rinse dispenser where you put the bleach? I'm not sure if mine has an actual "Rinse Dispenser", but it does have a dispenser for bleach.

I pour between 1/4 and 1/2 cup into the rinse dispenser in the agitator. Usually closer to 1/2 cup. I don't notice any spots on my clothes so I guess the borax is dissolving okay, even when there are small lumps.

I have a similar problem, except I don't know when to put the vinegar in and how much. My clothes stink like vinegar with only a 1/2 cup. I too have a plain old top washer! Do you also have a problem with the borax or soda not rinsing out of the laundry? I can tell on darker clothes especially... As for the things clinging to your clothes... I get hay or grass or something clinging to my clothes, usually when I see white specks from the homemade powder detergent... Weird. Hope you can find something that works! I will keep looking too:)

Nope, it's a plain old top load washer.

I was wondering if you use a high efficiency washer and dryer. I do, and have noticed a smell with clean laundry...if you have the HE machines, Tide makes a special cleaner to use in your washer (without clothes), that basically disinfects the machine. It works, I have used my box up now. And another little tid-bit that I am going to be using from now on is Tang..yep, the powdered drink mix. The seal around my machine door got a crack in it and I had to have it replaced. The Maytag tech who installed a new one said to try the Tang in your washer in place of the the Tide. It cleans and disinfects just like the Tide and leaves it smelling very fresh. This week I will be cleaning it with the Tang for the first time. My HE washer needs to be cleaned about once a month. Deposits and minerals from water can leave a buildup in your machine after use causing dingy odors in your laundery. And if you are not using the HE machines, try the Tang (1/2cup) in your washer anyway with the hottest temp water and see if it helps. Other than that, I really don't know what to tell you. We have pets too, and have cat hair on our clothes alot. Not when I pull it from the dryer, but after wearing it for a while....my daughter has a cute little saying, " A real woman has cat hair on her clothes"...she is a cat lover and 12...so she can get away with that;) Hope the issue gets resolved.
