I just read in a book from the library that you can add more salt to your wash to help keep it from freezing outside on the line. I haven't tried it yet, but wanted to share.

I hang my clothes out in the spring through fall but in the winter
I use my dryer and an indoor clothes line ... you may have just inspired me :)

I have a big attic that isn't heated so it's pretty cold up there. I was looking at it yesterday and it would be perfect to run some clothes line and dry my clothes up there.... I know this is about keeping laundry from freezing outside, but how would I keep my clothes from smelling like dusty 100 year old attic? I am trying to get as self sufficient as I can, my husband and I have both been working towards this goal. Kristina, I will check out your blog! Ohio is probably similar to Wisconsin winter wise, so I bet I can hang my clothes outside successfully too. Thanks!

I do hang my laundry out year round regardless. There are pics on my blog also. It is a permanent way of our life now. We strive, in our family, for self-sufficiency. If you go to my blog, click on the first one below, then scroll down and click on "Farmgirl Sisiterhood" tag to see pics in there about laundry. If there is a good wind, they dry completely, and I have 7 in my home to care for, so we have 2 large lines outside.

CeeJay started a thread about hanging laundry in the winter. It's in the "Over the Fence" section and it's titled "Am I Nuts....or What?"
You might want to check that out for stories about hanging laundry in the winter. :)

Yep, clothes still dry, even when it's cold, it just takes longer. We were still using our clothes line till it got super cold here, and now we hang in our garage. Interesting about the salt, I'll have to try it.

I was totally wondering if I could use my clothes line in the winter but I figured the laundry would freeze and not dry. That is a great idea! Has anyone tried it? I would love to know!
