this may seem silly to some -sincere question to me!
I grew up in the burbs and raised my kids there- I had "garbage collection" for years and years--yea i know about conservation etc--recycling is something i have always done....
however, where i am living now i don't have the luxury or hassle of collection--part of living where i do is to get back to nature so i am working hard at it!and loving it!
i have a "forever" coffee filter so that's not an issue-
i have rose bushes which love the grounds in summer- is it possible to use tooooo much???
so what do y'all do in winter with the grounds? i am still seperating them from the rest of my compost garbage....should i just dump it all together????????????
it's probly a simple solution but i don't have it! and i have two huge mixing bowls of used grounds!!!!

Yep, I have many a times stopped in at our little SB in town & they gladly have given me coffee grounds in big coffee bags...In fact, they told me to call ahead of time & they will save them for me...
I use mine for my roses..but it never occured to me to use them around my blueberries...OMG! Thanx for the tip!

I save my coffee grounds year round for most of the purposes posted above. Starbucks saves their coffee grounds for free for anyone that ask for them. They are packed into easy to carry bags. I usually put a dollar in the tip jar at the cash register. |

My grounds go in the compost or dumped directly on top of flower beds, and worked into the soil in the spring.

yes sorry it took a while to get back on this post. i use straight coffee from the pot. when cold i have a christmas cactus that loves coffee. i use it instead of water about one time a month or so. i use it on all my house plants. works great. happy days sherrye

i just LOVE coffee grounds. high nitrogen--protein level. i have worm beds that are the size of shower stalls. they are in the ground. i have red worms i feed them to year round. would love to add that coffee that has NO sugar or milk in it diluted and poured on house plants is a wonderful free fertilizer. i grow worms for my chickens. i usually have LOTS of chickens to eat the worms my coffee grows. worms are really little work. you can use a 5 gallon bucket in a garage for red worms. just a thought. happy days sherrye

We don't drink coffee in our house, but I am thinking of starting to ask the coffee stores around town to save them for me. I would like to add a good layer to my garden soil along with manure. They are really good for the soil and worms love them.

Very very good idea....I usually just dump the coffee ground anywhere in the backyard or my potted plants. I definitely going to add some coffee grounds to my carrot for next planting season...thanks for sharing the idea Terri. |

I put mine in a cardboard box, making sure that they dry, or they will mold, constantly stirring, then in the spring when I plant my potatoes....they get sprinkled on the potatoes when they are planted...NO RUST OR SCAB!!! It really does work, been doing it for the last few years, potatoes store better also, they also work wonders in the carrot row, no funny carrots......

Coffee grounds are acidic, so I'd bear that in mind. However, azaleas, rabbiteye blueberries and many other plants do prefer acidic soil. :0) I put my grounds in the compost pile...I live in the land of acidic soil, so I could dump them anywhere around here and probably be ok :0P

Thanks for the feedback on the forever filter Margo. I'm planning to purchase the one available from Cuisinart for our model so it should fit.
Today I remembered that as a kid my preschool had an indoor "sandbox" for us to play in that was filled with dried coffee grounds instead of sand. Does anyone remember this or know if they still do this today? It always smelled so good. My grandma used to save up her coffee grounds and every so often I'd take a bag to the teacher to help keep the box full.

I add mine to the compost once my old cat litter box is full. I save that to put on the blueberry bushes in the spring.

marilyn..i DO like the forever filter-however there are different shapes and sizes for diff pots- be sure to get teh right one or include a gift receipt for exchange! mine were seperate and i have a double pot from Ginny's so i had to buy two! we run decaf only in one pot and regular thru the other- my hubs used to have a reaction to caffeiene with one of his meds....
while the other filters aren't really expensive- they do take up space in trash and they are not always reliable- i hate it when they "cave" in and the grounds get into the pot!!!!

I have a worm composting bin and I spread coffee grounds in there year round. Do you like the "forever" coffee filter? Did it come with your coffee maker or is it a separate part? I've been thinking about giving one as a gift.
