I am getting a new top load HE washer and need to make more laundry soap. Do any of you favor powdered to liquid? And do you use fels or zote? Thanks for your input.

I make my own laundry soap with shavings from my handcrafted soap-washing soda and borax. It is AMAZING! My clothes are brighter than ever and so soft and UNSCENTED.
My laundry soap is neither powdered or liquid-kinda jelly like and I only use one capful per load. We were going through a lot of liquid laundry detergent, which is expensive and I thought to myself...I have all this soap I make why not make my own laundry soap? It's easy and very economical and I love the fact that I made it myself-

Thanks for the info about Zote being better than Fels. Will try the Dr. Bonners castile soap and see how that works - haven't found Zote where I live. Also have a front loader HE and have always used my powder recipe and haven't had any problem with it dissolving. But I grate it really fine and that probably helps. |

I've never had a problem with the powder not dissolving but I put my soap through the food processor so its really fine, which probably helps it dissolve better. I only use warm water for towels and sheets - everything else gets washed in cold.

My powdered detergent is leaving residue on my clothes. Can I convert it to liquid? If so how do I go about doing it? Does anyone have any other ideas? I've tried decreasing the amounts, but that also isn't working.

I use Zote (it has a citronella scent, but it does not make your clothes smell that way), and I have a front loading HE machine. I have also used some goat's milk soap (grated) as well. You just have to be careful that you're not adding in something with too many suds. I am sure that a homemade laundry bar would be wonderful as long as it didn't produce too many suds.

I like the liquid because there have been a few times the powder didn't dissolve in cold water. I haven't had any problems using the powder with warm or hot water.

I have a front loader and prefer the powder. I don't use either Zote or Fels. I tried Fels once and had a skin reaction to it. My SIL makes soap so I use extra bars that got chipped or didn't quite set right. I've also used Irish Spring when I didn't have anything else available. I add lemon or almond EO to my soap for a fragrence when I feel like it. I've never had a problem with it not dissolving and I use cold water for most my clothes and warm for a things like towels, bedding, df's socks...

I use a powedered form made with Dr. Bronners castille soap that I've shaved. I buy the unscented baby mild *flavor.*

I have made both, but will only make the powder because it's easy. We have a front loader. I use either Fels or my own.

Alee was my mentor  when I first started making laundry soap! Thanks again, Alee! I have a front loader and I make the powdered version using Zote. Some gals who use powdered soap say it doesn't always disintegrate due to cold water/temp. I wash my whites in hot/cold with hydrogen peroxide in the bleach container & vinegar in the rinse container (don't ever mix the two together, though). For my darks, I use warm/cold & only vinegar in the rinse (as hydrogen peroxide with "bleach" the colors). I've found Zote at Mexican markets. I think Amazon carries it, too. Zote has optical brighteners in it. It has a "fruit loop" smell to it <--that's what my kids say.

I don't use either because both have artificial scents in them. I make my own laundry bar soap to shave and put in my homemade laundry powder. I usually make the powder because it's easier but for a HE I would probably make the liquid just to make sure it was completely dissolved. Between Fels and Zote I think it is 6 one way and half a dozen the other.
