I have been switching over to greener living the last 2 years; I make all my laundry products now, fresh fruit and veggie wash, I use borax to scrub our porcelein claw foot tub now-really works wonderful, and I use Dr. Bonners castile soaps to do alot of scrubbing and cleaning, along with vinegar on stainless and such.
However, I still need a good dish washing soap-I wash dishes only by hand, never had a dish washer and never wanted one-lol
I have tried diluting the castile soaps and I don't like that, seems to leave a film on the dishes.
any recipe ideas? thanks so much

I'm glad to have found this thread. Running low in dishsoap, and going to give this a try. I have one question -- the bar soap, once shredded, how many cups does it make? I don't have access to this, but can buy pure shredded soap flakes, which I use for my laundry. Thought I would you this as replacement, but need a measurement to work with.

Perhaps you could try just grating some bar soap into the dishwater and swishing it around and then washing your dishes. That's what our great grandmothers did in the olden days. Perhaps you could put a little vinegar in the rinse water. Good luck and let us now what you decide to use. |

I'm glad I found this thread, I ran out of dish soap and I used castile soap and it left a film even after I rinsed it in vinegar water. My question is what is Octagon soap? Also, is there any other things I can use to wash my dishes? We can't pick any dish soap up until we get paid this weekend and I do not want my dishes to get stacked up. I do have borax, vinegar, baking soda (I'm all out of washing soda). . I just don't know what to do to wash my dishes until payday. Any tips? Thanks!

thank you Carla, so much, as I have been searching for a recipe. I am not familiar with ocatagon soap-do you know if it is just a plain bar of soap? I know we don't have that near me. I have found kirks soap-I use it for making my laundry soap-is a pure soap, that has been made since the early 1800s
Hadn't thought of vinegar for my dishes-I use that as part of my fabric softener recipe-thanks again Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Yea, the olive oil in the Castile soap will leave a film.
There are products available out there now. Planet dish washing soap is a good one.
Anyway, here's a homemade dish detergent recipe that someone posted on the internet that you can cook up.
The vinegar in the rinse water is a great idea because it will get the dishes squeaky clean [I can't stand slimy dishes].
Dishwashing Detergent for Handwashing
After searching many sites for a homemade hand dishwashing detergent, I have made up my own recipe and I'm pleased to say it works!
Ingredients
• 2 Bars shredded Octagon soap
• 1 cup baking soda
• 1/4 cup washing soda
• 1/4 cup lemon juice
Directions
Put shredded soap in 4 1/2- 5 quarts of water and melt on stove. When melted, turn stove off and add all other ingredients and stir. When cooled down, pour in sealed containers.
Use as you would any other dish detergent. The only thing is that it doesn't suds much but gets dishes real clean. I keep a partial bar of Octagon soap by the sink to use when needed. I also use 1/8 cup of vinegar in the rinse water. Hope this works for you!
