Hi all,
The 'green' light bulb just went on this morning as I was cleansing my face. I do use an astringent that's mostly natural ingredients...that I pay good money for. So, I got to thinking, why can't I make my own and save tons of $$? I thought about store products & believe that green tea has been added to some of these products. I always have green tea on hand. Other than this ingredient,I'm clueless. Does anybody have any good homemade recipes for 'oily skin' astringent? All ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Yes I know they use it to clean skin in the hospital but that's before a break in the skin. That could cause infection. Cause your skin is a layer to protect your insides. It is still toxic. They also clean my mom's open wounds with bleach at the hospital, but I wouldn't clean my face with that same bleach solution. Is all I am saying.

I'm not judging, I just know some people don't know that alcohol is very toxic, and to be careful with it. I have to use alcohol daily when giving myself shots. But, I wouldn't put it on my face, or any where where I am not breaking skin.

It's not pure alcohol, the solution is diluted, about 70%.
Same stuff they use in the hospital to cleanse your skin before surgeries.
It kills the bacteria which cause breakouts. Works better than anything else I've tried!

You know, I don't get oily in my T-zone as I get oily on each side of my nose down each side of my mouth and down my chin. It's so weird! I've got some Witch Hazel-I usually use Lush's Tea Tree Water as an astringent, but I think I may go for a cheaper alternative.

Starbucks and sushi to green fried tomatoes and corn pudding-I wouldn't change it for the world.

Alcohol is kind of toxic. I would be kind of careful putting it directly on my skin daily.

I use witch hazel as well, about the same price as alcohol.

My facial routine is wash with ponds cold cream, then swab witch hazel all over with the square cotton things (not the balls), then use the ponds moisturizing cream. It seems to be good routine for both oily and dry. As I have combo (the T zone effect).

I am getting a bit long in the tooth though, so I may get the ponds for anti aging next time...I don't know yet though.

We use wintergreen-scented alcohol, about $1 at Dollar General, Walmart, whereever. Works fantastically - both I and my 13 year old use it. No more expensive acne treatments! Doesn't dry out your skin if you have oily skin. TRY IT, it's super!

Kendy, I have been mixing raw apple cider vinegar with water and adding a few drops of Melaleuca/tea tree oil. So far it hasn't dried out my face & seems to be keeping the blemishes away. I think I'll stick with this until it gives me a reason to switch to something else.

I used apple cider mixed with water. It kinda dried out my skin, and my skin in rather oily. Just watch out!

I use the plain old witch hazel as well. I put it in a small bottle about 3/4 full and add the rest just plain water. It isn't so strong then but still works wonders. And, if you keep it in the fridge (sometimes I do) it is such a great way to cool off on a hot day just by swabbing it onto your face with a cotton ball.

That's a good one too Catherine! I forgot about witch hazel! I have some in the fridge too!

I have found good old witch hazel to be the best astringent for me when I am fighting breakouts or in the hot, humid summertime. AND it is readily available and CHEAP lol.

Lyn- Whenever I make astringent for use I do AVC + Tea Tree oil + herbs (depending on what my skin is doing). I'll have to look at Kayla's Recipe! It sounds great!

Thanks, Alee! I do use this often for all sorts of skin issues as well as household cleaning. I will use it on blemishes when they spring up. I am looking for something that I can make as a toner as part of my daily face cleaning routine. Actually, I reek of tea tree oil right now. Just got done putting it on some itchy mosquito bites. It's the 'wonder oil' in this house!

Lyn,
I am 50, so there is NO WAY I look as adorable as Kayla,(that girl is gorgeous & talented beyond belief) I did notice that the 1st week or so, I had a few blemishes, & now, it is clear & smooth. Give it a try. I pulsed my plantain in the food proecessor to break it up a bit. It actually has a pleasant scent when mixed with the vinegar.
Good Luck

Thanks, Lisa! I looked up plantain in Michigan and by george, they're growing all over my yard! I've been telling my husband for years that our yard is NOT full of weeds but a holistic medicine cabinet! AND just last week I got a gallon of Bragg's organic raw apple cider vinegar, the same kind Kayla uses! I'll have to try a small batch of this to see how it works. Thanks for the recipe tip! I look forward to trying it & I'm curious to know how your skin's doing with it, if you don't mind sharing.

I have been using the plantain tincture that I got from fellow farmgirl Kayla(fiddlegirl89)
Here is a link to her blog with a recipe. The post was the April 23rd post.

The vinegar is astringent, and the plaintain is soothing. Plantain is a weed that grows nearly everywhere!
