My self cleaning has broken on my oven... to bad so sad..
Anyone have a suggestion on what to use to clean the inside of an oven? I dont want to use brillo or steel wool, I think it would scratch the inside of the oven. And I think commercial oven cleaner will kill me, and my little do to.

Beth, I only read about the salt treatment recently. The other night I had a fruit custard cake overflow a bit and threw salt on it to see what would happen. I was shocked at how easily the mess cleaned up once the oven was cool! Most came right up with the foulest salt I have ever seen LOL and the rest wiped off with just a touch of vinegar and baking soda, really no scrubbing needed. Can't believe I hadn't heard that one before but I will surely use it again!

I personally use salt and cut lemons to clean the oven. You can also place a pan with water and lemon juice inside the oven, turn oven on to heat well, and the humidity will help loosen any dirt and then using a green cleaning pad, simply wash the crud off. Also works well with a microwave oven.
And when I make I keep a container of salt near the stove and pour it on any spill that is still hot, because this helps absorb the spill which can then be gently lifted off with a metal spatula.

Also, really badly baked on stuff might need a second application of baking soda. Let it sit and react with the greasy baked on goo and it will come off easier than if you try right away and use elbow grease. Not entirely green but way better than oven cleaner is Bar Keeper's Friend. It has oxalic acid and while it dries out your skin terribly without gloves, there are no fumes and it is real mild. Let it soak on there like the baking soda. I have had to use this usually whenever I move into a new rental!

I can't use the smelly cleaners so I just use vinegar and hot water.
If there's baked on crud, get it wet and let it sit.
Then get it with the baking soda soft scrub and a non-scratch scrubby pad.
Oven cleaner
1 small box of Baking soda
water
Liquid Castile soap
Sprinkle water generously over the bottom of the oven, and cover with baking soda, avoid heat coil. Sprinkle more water over soda. Let it sit overnight. Wipe it up in the morning, use a scrubby pad. To remove the reside, put a bit of the castile soap on a damp cloth and wipe clean.

Robin: Our house was flooded twice by a hurricane, and after each flood, I cleaned the wall oven with one of the brillo pads. It didn't scratch the oven at all. I cleaned it with vinegar and water. Then I tried some kind of oven cleaner that smelled so bad. But, it cleaned the oven really good. Good luck.
