Kim, I think that it should be safe for the septic because it's all naturally occurring ingredients. For your washer though, and this is for EVERYONE who makes their own laundry soap. Make sure that once a month you run a SUPER HOT wash with some vinegar (no clothes) to clean out the pipes because homemade laundry soap will gunk up your pipes and cause your machine to not work properly if you don't. Dishwashers usually run super hot, so you shouldn't have to worry about that with them.

You can use Ivory soap in place of some hand soaps, the duggars has it listed in there recipe.

Thnks ladies - I can find the Borax - it is the hand soap I need - will keep checking. Thanks for the information on the washing soda, Siobhan. I am working on this conversion to new laundry and dishwasher soap. Will this be better in a septic tank? My washer will drain down my side hill, but the dishwasher will go into the septic system and want to make sure it is biodegradable.

Home Depot carries Borax, so does Target. Good luck finding what you need!

Enter your zip code here to find the closest store to sell A&H Super Washing Soda or buy online at A&H or Meijer.com

I don't know about Boraxo hand soap. I use straight Borax and Fels Naptha soap in my laundry recipe, which is found in the laundry aisle at the grocery store.
