I never use vinegar very interesting though. I must try that one day.

What I do use is those "reusable dryer ball" I even bought it for my mom and sister and we rarely use any softerner.

I use vinegar as well, but following the suggestion of one of the ladies on here, (I don't have a softener bucket) I put it in a downy ball and toss it into the wash. It helps to get the musty smell out, softens the clothes, and my son's clothes don't seem as staticy (he doesn't like line dryed clothes.. sigh).

Blessings,
Dawnia

I have begun using vinegar. But I still use Arm and Hammer dryer sheets for bedding. They are made with natural oils for scent. As long as I am not using so much chemicals, I don't see where this would hurt.

kathy you are right about the chemicals. the main scarey thing is what they use to make it spread onto all the clothes evenly. it is actually a chemical thats other purpose is to KILL BUGS. it does this by destroying the porphyrin pathway or blood of the bug. it does the same thing to people only slowly. it is neurotoxic and carcenagentic. which means it messes with nerves and causes cancer. it also mimics hormones and fills the recepter sites that need hormones. hence goofy emotions and hot flashes. one of the most toxic products in a HOME. i use vinegar also happy days sherrye

I've read where most fabric softeners us toxic chemicals so I gave it up and use vinegar. It's great for getting off any left over soap residue and the clothes do feel better.

Just vinegar in the rinse water and then a couple of tennis balls in the dryer to cut static.

I just pour it into the place marked"fabric softner" in my washer. it doesn't take much. I'd say it's about 1/4 cup...if that much. My sister was amazed how nice her clothes felt when she came to visit last summer.

How much white vinegar does one need to put in a big load of towels, wash rags, etc...? Can I do the same for dark clothes?
Those dryer sheets or getting a bit expensive.

I put a little white vinegar in the softner place in
the washer - it also helps to get any residual soap out of
clothes and if you hang them out, this will help make them - especially if you hang them out on the line.

I just started using the white vinegar when I made my own laundry detergent. It is really doing great. I will try the lavendar in it and see how that works also. Thanks for the great ideas.

I use fabric softener when I have to hang the clothes out in the summer. I mostly do it for the smell though. It really doesn't do much as far as really making them soft.
The vinegar is great for the softness and super much cheaper. :)

When I did my big green/natural/organic overhaul last year, I quit using anything in the rinse water, until I read on here about using vinegar, so that's what I use now. For my things, and our sheets I add lavender eo also.

We generally don't use fabric softener, but if we do need something we use vinegar.
I think this is one of those things that freaks my mom out. ;)

Karen, I use vinegar to rinse. And I started putting lavender flowers in for scent. I can't remember the exact measurement but in a quart of vinegar use 1 cup lavender flowers. Leave for a week and strain out the flowers. I have the rinse thing in the agitator so I fill that up. I also put some lavender essential oil in the homemade laundry soap. too. Smells good.
