I was wondering for those of you ladies that used to use store bought laundry detergent and are now using homemade laundry soap, what is the price comparison? I pay $2.98 a box for the Purex powder brand and it gets me through about 30 loads of washing. This is the closest to pure that I can find.

Now, what would you say your savings or extra cost is by using the homemade stuff? I would like to use it, but I am thinking that is just much more costly and since we are watching our budget very closely, I don't know if it is cost effective to add it in.:)

Appreciate your input!
hugs,
Jess

I use one box of borax, one box of washing soda, 3 grated bars of laundry soap and some baking soda if hard water. I used to be able to buy my baking soda in bulk at a cheap grocery store so that saved and now I make my own special laundry soap so that saves as well- but I got down to 4 cents by buying the washing soda and borax on sale and using only 2 table spoons per load. Really! That was enough!! Especially for just day to day clothes. I used a bit more on my husband's work shirts and occasionally since he worked in a really dirty area of his store and had to wear white- I would make a paste of the combination and rub it on his shirt collar and any stains. It worked great. I also used that on Nora's diapers.

Alee- what "recipe" do you use for your soap?

4 cents is a lot better than almost10 cents a load with the Purex. :)

Jessie that is comparable to the homemade laundry soap- though I have gotten my price per load down as far as 4 cents a load with the homemade stuff when I got everything on sale. Also you have to make sure you are only using the right amount per load and not adding extra!
