i always mop the floors with vinegar. i ran across this tip somewhere along the way, but add 6 drops of essential oil to your vinegar/water mixture and it will smell wonderful! i love using lavendar, lemon, or a mixture of both...

Hi All,

Does anyone have thoughts on the safety/effectiveness of using vinegar in a Hoover carpet steam cleaner? The house I rent has beige carpets, and even little spots make the carpet look gross. I love cleaning with the lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, and borax in the rest of my house, but am not looking forward to piling on the chemicals just to get the carpet clean.

Distilled white vinegar is apparently best for germ-killing because it has a steady level of acidity (unlike cider and homemade vinegars). It's pretty cool stuff, in my opinion! With baking soda, borax, some soap, and essential oils, it's about all you need to clean house with! Well, and maybe a little furniture oil for your wood stuff. And a vacuum cleaner - can't go without that when you've got carpets! Believe me, I've tried. Carpet sweepers don't cut it, even on low-pile carpet. :D

I don't know what the exact "stats" are about Vinegar and killing bacteria, germs, etc.... But, I know our church uses vinegar/water to clean baby toys instead of bleach/water.

I use it for cleaning, mopping and in the rinse cycle of clothes washing (a tip I got from here several years ago). I like to add Tea Tree Oil (thinking I'm killing more germs) and lemon oil for the fresh aroma. I use a 1 gallon sprayer of vinegar/water for cleaning animal pens and spraying bedding. We have red ants down here and vinegar does a pretty good job of taking out the "sting" feeling on your skin when you get red ant bites.

One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt."

sounds good. as soon as I can dig out of my driveway I am going to get some. With the snow my floors are really taking a beating...

I never think to use apple cider vinegar, but of course it would work just as well. Vinegar is a staple cleaner in my house--we have wood laminate floors and it's the only thing that cleans without leaving a film.

Thanks for the great tip. I have not tried the vinegar/water to mop with. What are you using on hardwood floors as a cleaner?

What is the ratio of water to vinegar or vice versa? I tried this on Tuesday with 8 cups hot water and 1 cup vinegar and lavender eo. I was just guessing at the amounts.

I never thought of adding essential oils to the vinegar. I make my own cleaner and use sweet orange, peppermint, and a little tea tree. Smells wonderful and keeps the bugs at bay.

isn't it wonderful to be able to buy and use something that doesn't cost half as much for cleaning? and vinegar is one of those "must have" products for around the house. same with baking soda.... i havn't used store bought cleaner for mopping in a long time... i wonder if vinegar actually works better?

I've started cleaning with vinegr water and essential oils a while back. I'm much happier with it than I was with expensive store bought products.

Hi Elizabeth:
I also use vinegar and water to do the floors. I'll have to try the essential oil. I love lavendar.
