I bought a wonderful vintage enamel topped bakers table. Truly awesome, but not sure how to care for it. I want to put a clear coat on it for protection. Any advice ladies? |

I wouldn't put any kind of coating on it. I have 2 and both are at least 50 years old and they still look terrific.

Thanks for the replies! Mine is white top with black edges and wooden legs with two drawers - I found mine on craigs list for $50. I love it was just worried about wear and tear as were using it as a kitchen table. It is absolutely PERFECT for my kitchen! As soon as I can figure out how to put pics on my new computer I will post pics - would love to see yalls. I also have an enameled topped cabinet in my kitchen as well! I just adore them! I will try the lemon juice trick for the few stains and then leave it alone! |

If you really want to put some kind of protectant on it, what about car wax? It's made for enamel, right?

I bought mine in an antiques store with some of my wedding money. It fit our old house in Cleveland PERFECTLY, but now it's relegated to be my computer desk. I've never done anything special to it; just wiped it down when it needed it. I did once use white enamel paint (the kind you find in hobby shops) to fix a little nick in the top. Mine is white with a red lattice-type design on top and red edges. Does anyone else's have wings that pull up to make the table larger, like mine?

Mines white with a blue diamond print on it. I love love love it but would not coat it with anything... I just found mine at a thrift store for $42!!!

I clean mine with soap and water and it stays looking great, it's white with blue edges and has a small drawer with dividers so I guess it was for silverware.

I would not put anything on it at all, it would ruin the value, and as someone else said it would chip. If its white and it has stains, soak rags in lemon juice and lay over the stain and after lots of applications it will lighten or remove the stain. I found one at a yardsale years ago that someone was useing in a garage as a workbench, it was white with the light green edges, it took me weeks to get it clean, but it is much needed extra counter space in my kitchen now.

I just mine use mine for my computer table. You can't put a coat of anything on it or it will just start chipping off. Just clean it with window clearner. If they get really bad looking or you want to change the color you can send them off and have them re-enameled. Mine has chrome legs and I just found the place to send them to be rechromed. What color is yours? Mine is bright white with the cherry red around the edges.

I had an enamel topped table many yrs ago. I loved using it for making pie crust, etc. I'm not sure I would clear coat it if you intend to use it for food prep. I just used mine, washed it off and never thought twice. I don't recall that it scratched easily and I was always doing something on it. They wear like iron. I'm sure some of the other ladies here will have ideas that might help if you're worried about the surface.
