I have been making and selling a great lotion for a couple years..but really want to find a recipe that doesn't have the preservative or other questionable ingredients  and uses all natural or organic ingredients? Any other farmgirl lotion maker who has a recipe to share? Thanks!!

Vitamin E is not a preservative. It is used to extend the life of the oils in your soaps and lotions so they don't go rancid. If you make any kind of lotion using water then you will need to use a preservative.
Mine is just a little old fashioned garden where the flowers come together to praise the Lord, and teach all who look upon them to do likewise.

Vitamin E is considered a preservative and is in many mainline skincare products under its chemical name, tocopherol acetate. It helps extend shelf life. I'm really not sure how much to add, but I would try squeezing a capsule into 8 oz of cream and see how that works. Google some recipes, maybe?

Thank you to all of the above. The jars are really hard to get clean if they've already had a lotion in them. The beeswax is a killer! I also agree it must be something with the way I am infusing the calendula in the water. I will try an oil infusion. Please tell me more about this vitamin E thing...it is considered a preservative? How many capsules for an 8 - 10 oz jar? |

I would think the problem could be one of 2 things...the jar is clean, but is it sterile, like when you boil them when canning? But what I'm really thinking is its the plant infusion. I would squeeze a vitamin E capsule into the lotion as a natural preservative. Good Luck!

Judi, Are you using distilled water? That is a must. I'm just learning about infusions but know that if the herbs or flowers aren't totally dry then it will cause mold. You would probably do better infusing the calendula in oil. I hate to use preservatives but they are almost necessary in any recipe that includes water. Try the link that I gave above for the Suprapein. It is supposed to be all natural. I'm going to get some to try it because I want to put it in my salt scrubs. Even though I won't be using water in the recipe, water could get in the jar from people using them in the shower or tub. Hope this helps.

I have been making some lotions, but am having a problem with mold. I have a jar I am keeping in the fridge for about two weeks, and it's already molding! The jars are very clean and dry, and I'm using vegetable oils, beeswax, and water infused with calendula. Could it be the water infusion? I see some preservatives listed at the above web site, but don't know if they are "natural". Any ideas? |

Mumsie -- if you use only oils you won't need a preservative for the lotion bars -- but you probably already know that! Isn't is fun doing this? I've spent the last week working on several different recipes for new Spring stuff. I get so involved I don't want to do anything else.

Thank you, thank you Julia H., Kay, Alee and Aunt Jenny!! Got some great recipes..from some "googled" websites and the info on the natural preservative from the Soapdish website..awesome! I have great hopes and plans for a new organic/natural line of lotions, and trying my hand at lotion bars! Showers of Blessings on all of you.

Scroll down until find Suprapein.
I use all natural or organic ingredients in my lotion bars. Just google a recipe and I'm sure you'll come up with lots. You can always use organic in place of the ingredients called for in the recipe. www.essentialwholesale.com has the best ingredients. Very high quality and lots are organic. They are a bit spendier than some suppliers but the quality is worth. Between Friends Too is another great supplier.

I mix beeswax, vegatable oil, and water until none of the ingredients separate to make a lotion bar. This saved my nose over my last cold.
